The Loss of a Pet

Mazzy
2000-July 10, 2009

It has been a very rough weekend. Our cat, Mazzy, passed away on Friday. Mazzy was Grant's beloved cat, and could often be found chasing after Grant, biting his feet.

We found Mazzy, and his sister, Cosette, just weeks after our wedding, in the fall of 2000. We were at a local spring, getting some water, and Grant spotted two cats in the weeds, across the road. This skinny, scraggly cat started to walk over to us, and Grant had to shoo him off the road so he didn't get hit by an oncoming car. I'm a sucker, so we ended up taking the two cats home to join our family. When we took them to the vet, he told us that Mazzy shouldn't even be alive, because he was filled with worms and parasites, and was so unhealthy. He told us not to expect much.

Mazzy was not an attractive cat. He was sweet and lovable, though, and didn't have a mean bone in his body. Even though we were always told how unhealthy he was, he lived over 9 years.

Mazzy will be missed, especially by my husband, who is having a very hard time with this loss. Mazzy is now at peace, in our backyard. We love you, Mazz!

  1. Awww...losing a pet is the worst part of having them... I just lost one a few weeks ago, so I feel your pain.

Which one is he, in the pic?

  2. I am so sorry for your loss. Pets are truely members of the family, or at least they should be. I still miss my cat who passed away a little over a year ago, and he wasn't even that nice (at least not to strangers).

  6. I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty, we lost ours 2 weeks ago and I felt like my heart had been ripped out. My husband went and found me a new kitten and he is the sweetest thing ever. He will never replace the other one, but he sure helps with the sadness. I hope your husband & family recover from your loss soon.

  7. I am so sorry about the loss of your cat. We have lost two pets since March and they were both very hard on the family. I actually wrote about them if you wanted to check it out on my blog...the one is "praying thank yous" and there are various entries about my parakeet...the latest is "How I became a Bird Mama." Also, "It takes a mighty good husband..." and "There is Something about Sisters". I always expected the children to be upset at the loss of a pet...but didn't think it would reduce me to tears over and over. I hope perhaps our experience will bring you a little comfort.
