A Blessed Birthday and Easter Weekend

big family blog

Easter Weekend was a busy one! It started off with my birthday on Good Friday, was filled with our favorite Easter traditions, and ended with a beautiful Easter Sunday. I know I'm in the minority, but Easter is one of my favorite holidays!

We packed a LOT into 3 days! I had a mini birthday celebration, we dyed Easter Eggs, we had two backyard egg hunts, we had a mini Saturday evening Easter dinner with two friends, and we celebrated Easter with my parents and my sister's family. Other than not being able to go to church in person, the weekend was perfect!

I planned on posting the day after Easter, but apparently when I turned another year older, my body decided to break! I pulled a muscle in my lower back for the first time ever, and I literally could not move without feeling excruciating pain for two days, and I ended up in bed for hours. Thankfully, it went away quickly, and to celebrate, I got my first vaccine, and felt yucky for about 24 hours. But, hey, let's get back to my birthday and Easter!

The 10 Valuable Lessons I Learned From Easter in Quarantine

Big Family Blog

Easter Sunday was definitely a lot different this year! Although we missed hugging our family, getting back to the basics in quarantine actually turned out to be a positive experience. I love Easter, but I wasn't expecting much this year. Surprisingly, though, it turned out to be one of my favorite Easters, and it will certainly be a memorable one!

I think the biggest difference this year was TIME. We had time to enjoy our family traditions, time to enjoy the holiday, and time to focus on the important things. Despite not spending the morning at church, I feel like this Easter was the most meaningful Easter we've ever had as a family.

Easter activities might have been canceled, but Easter was still very much here! Easter is about celebrating the fact that He is Risen, and that can be done anywhere. When we took away our usual Easter hustle and chaos, we were able to focus on what we were truly celebrating, and spend time together as a family!

I'm BACK!!! / Easter 2019 / Baby's First Easter

Easter Photography

Hello, friends! I'm (hopefully) back for good! I had no idea adjusting to life with five kids was going to be so difficult and time-consuming. Adjusting to life with 1, 2, 3, and 4 kids (even with a surprise Down syndrome diagnosis) was a breeze, but 5 is the number that did us in! Liam is approximately 10 kids in 1, and Coen has acid reflux and is such a mama's boy that my husband lovingly refers to him as my little parasite. My hands are never free, but I think I'm getting the hang of things, and I'm kicking off my return to blogging with a quick recap of Easter 2019!

This year, we kept Easter simple. We had no idea that Coen had acid reflux yet, so he was really fussy. We decided to spend most of Easter at home, focusing on family activities. Although it didn't feel quite the same, we had a nice holiday!

This year, we took the focus off of the Easter Bunny. We haven't visited the Easter Bunny in years, and this year we didn't do any egg hunts, either. We briefly mentioned the Easter Bunny bringing baskets, but that was it. Instead, we dyed Easter Eggs together. We had a small family dinner. We talked about the reason we were celebrating. We baked and decorated cookies. We sat down to watch The Ten Commandments together. Perhaps next year we'll actually make it to church, but this year, I decided to let go of the guilt, realize that we can't possibly do it all, and focus on WHY we were celebrating in the first place! And you know what? Once the pressure was off, it was GOOD!

Egg-cellent Easter Sensory Bin

Egg-cellent Easter Sensory Bin

Liam and Lily love sensory bins! We have a big collection of sensory bin fillers, and I try to rotate through themed bins twice a month. Sensory play is my secret weapon for those inevitable "I'm bored" moments! Our current Sensory Bin encourages egg-cellent Easter sensory play!

Easter Basket Fillers for Toddlers, Kids, Tweens & Teens

Easter Basket Fillers for Toddlers, Kids, Tweens & Teens

With Easter just days away, I, like many other parents, am scrambling to fill those Easter Baskets! We accumulate plenty of junk between four kids, so we try to make sure that almost every item in their baskets is useful or meaningful. And with a toddler/preschooler, a 6 year old, a tween and a teen, we have a lot of ideas to come up with!

The Best Easter Moments of 2017

Easter has always been one of my favorite holidays! Even though we have the same traditions and do the same thing every year, I just love everything about it. I was really looking forward to it this year, but nothing seems to go exactly as planned these days!

Over the past two weeks, my family has been sick. 5 out of 6 of us came down with a strain of the flu, and it took us down one after the other. Just as one person improved, somebody else got sick. Lily was the only one who escaped it! It was a ROUGH two weeks.

Dylan, Liam and I bounced back quickly. Dylan and Liam had a fever, chills and body aches for 48 hours, then they were fine. I only had it for 24 hours, then it turned into a cold. Grant, however, has been sick for 2 weeks, and Lexie ended up getting it most recently, and was sick with a really high fever from Tuesday until Saturday.

Everyone who was still sick was definitely improving, but Grant and Lexie were still very congested and had a lingering cough that just wouldn't quit. On the evening before Easter, we realized that we would have to change our plans for the following day, and miss the Easter service at church for the first time ever.

To say it was a letdown is an understatement. It just didn't feel like Easter Sunday! But these bumps in the road happen, and it's up to us to adapt. So we focused on the positive. No, we didn't make it to church and we had to cancel most of our plans. But the six of us got to celebrate Easter together, and that's all that really matters!

The Lucky Few

Although our Easter didn't go exactly as planned, it was still full of special moments that I will always want to remember!

We followed our usual tradition of dyeing Easter Eggs on the evening before Easter. Dylan, Lexie, Lily, and even Liam participated.

Nothing Down About It
Easter Traditions

Liam TRIED this year. He quickly got the hang of shaking the eggs in the bag, but soon realized that tossing the bag across the room was just as much fun. He ended up with a half dozen of dyed, cracked eggs!

Egg Dyeing with a Toddler

As usual, my girls were the most creative and put the most effort into it!

Easter Eggs

Four dozen eggs later, they were done!

After the kids were in bed, it was time to prepare for Easter morning! I assembled the baskets and hid them, then stuffed all of our plastic eggs for our Egg Hunt.

Easter Baskets

I fell into bed, completely exhausted, and before I knew it, Lily was in our room asking if they could wake up and search for their baskets!

Easter Sunday started perfectly! I opened my eyes to a bright, warm beautiful Spring Day, and everyone was in a happy mood. Instead of rushing into everything like we typically do, we had the chance to tackle Easter morning calmly for the first time ever.

Easter

Our four kids ran off in search of their baskets, then went examined each item thoroughly. We weren't rushing out the door for church this year, so we even let the kids enjoy a breakfast of Easter candy!

Down Syndrome Awareness

The Easter Sunday service at church is my favorite service of the year, so I was really bummed that we were missing it. As I cooked Easter brunch, a warm breeze blew into the kitchen from the open window, and I could hear the church bells in the distance, signaling the end of the service.

I could hear all four of my kids laughing in the next room, and it hit me then that in the grand scheme of things, it didn't really matter that we were missing church. We were still celebrating Easter, and we were celebrating together!

That evening, we went to my parent's house for Easter dinner. My mom had been sick, too, and they didn't mind one bit that we were joining them, germs and all!

After we ate a delicious Easter dinner together, Grant and I set up for our annual Egg Hunt in my parent's yard.  We no longer attend public egg hunts because they are too quick and cutthroat, and instead, we do it on our own. The kids love it so much more, and they actually look forward to it!

Liam still wasn't interested in participating. Running around the yard and playing was more appealing! There just might have been an egg incident, too. Somebody might have hidden an egg in the dryer vent only to have a gust of wind blow it completely into the dryer! Oops...luckily I took off the dryer hose, tilted the dryer and rescued the egg!

Dylan, Lexie, Lily and Liam worked together to find every single egg, then had even more fun emptying each egg!

After the egg hunt, they all posed willingly (almost) for a quick Easter Sunday photo session!

We had dessert with my parents, then enjoyed the last gorgeous hour of daylight together on their deck. We may not have been able to spend Easter with most of our family like we typically do, but we sure felt blessed to be able to spend it with my parents! It was a perfect evening!

Easter Style

We reluctantly said our goodbyes, then headed home. Grant and I decided that we had to add some more religion to our day, so we all changed into our pajamas and curled up on the couch to watch The Ten Commandments. Lily and Liam quickly fell asleep, but Dylan and Lexie impressed us. Lexie fell asleep JUST before the end, and Dylan made it the entire way through! It was a great end to our Easter Sunday!

Although our Easter didn't go exactly as planned, we made the most of it, and enjoyed celebrating the holiday together. I will definitely hold many of these memories dear for years to come!

Five Favorite Easter Ideas for Kids: Eat, Craft, Play!

Happy Easter weekend to those of you who celebrate! I love Easter so much, and I'm really looking forward to spending it with my sweet family.

We have been in Easter mode all week. From reading books to having an Easter picnic to baking to crafting, we managed to check almost everything off of our Easter Bucket List. The only thing I didn't manage to do? Finish decorating the house! The flu that took down 5 of our 6 family members over the past few weeks really got in the way of our Easter plans. More than half of our decorations are still in the attic! Better luck next year, right?!?

I already shared a few of our favorite Easter traditions, including a Lollipop Garden and Easter Egg Mini-Meals, but these five Easter ideas also got a big thumbs up from my kids!

Peeps Nest Cupcakes

Easter Peeps Nest Cupcakes

These cupcakes so cute and so easy to make! Just make your favorite cupcake, top it with your favorite frosting, then create a nest and eggs on top using edible Easter grass, jelly beans and Peeps chicks!

Lily had a lot of fun decorating these cupcakes with me. We had to work quickly, because the toddler tornado kept running over and stealing the Peeps off the top of the cupcakes! There were a few losses, but we ended up with 16 adorable and delicious cupcakes!

Foil Easter Egg Craft

Some of you may remember our foil fish craft from Camp Mom over the Summer. It was such a simple craft, and the kids loved it! Their foil fish ended up on display until just a few weeks ago. This craft idea is also super cute for Easter!

All you need to create this craft is cardboard, foil and permanent markers. (Metallic or Neon markers work the best.)

Easter Craft

The procedure is easy! Just trace a large egg shape on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. Cover the cardboard egg with a piece of foil that is large enough to be folded over the edges. Smooth out the surface on the front of the egg and let your kids decorate it with permanent markers!

The end result is a really cute art project that can be displayed for the holiday!

Easter Books

Our collection of Easter books made its way to the holiday book crate, and my kids have been reading them every day. I didn't get the chance to share all of our favorite Easter books, so I figured I would share the two books that are read the most.

Liam loves to read and he can't get enough of Easter Surprise! He loves to pull the eggs apart to see what's inside!

Easter Books

Lily is really into The Easter Story this year. It's a religious book and she has been asking so many questions. This book explains Easter in a simple way so it's easy for younger kids to understand.

Rice Krispies Eggs

Once upon a time, I tried that awesome idea of filling plastic Easter Eggs with Rice Krispies Treats so they form in the shape of an egg. Yeah...never again. Getting them out of those eggs was a nightmare, even with a ton of cooking spray!

We much prefer the shaping the Rice Krispies Treats into eggs method! It still isn't as easy as it sounds, but it's much easier than the other way. They do turn out really cute!

Rice Krispies Treats Eggs

How To:

  1. Stretch out a piece of wax paper on your counter and spray with cooking spray.
  2. Make the Rice Krispies Treats according to the directions on the back of the box.
  3. Drop the Rice Krispies Treats in large, rounded spoonfuls onto the wax paper.
  4. Allow to mostly cool, then use your cooking oil-covered hands to form them into an egg shape.
  5. Allow to cool completely, then spread a thin layer of frosting on top of each egg.
  6. Top with sprinkles.

Easter Egg Sensory Bin

Sensory Bin

Last year, we had an Easter Egg Sensory Bin, but this year we kicked it up a notch. I grabbed our big box of plastic Easter Eggs and dumped them into Liam's ball pit! His mind was blown. He immediately crawled inside and he stayed there for an hour.

It's such a simple idea, but taking apart plastic Easter Eggs and putting them back together over and over again provides hours of entertainment! (Plus it's awesome for strengthening those fine motor skills!) It's even more fun if you give them little items to put inside. Lily and Liam love it so much that they're going to be sad to see it go!

Happy Easter, my friends!

The Kids Behind The Blog {April}

I love the month of April! The days are longer and warmer, Spring is in full bloom and Easter is right around the corner. It definitely makes me happy after a dreary winter, and the promise of the (slightly more) carefree days ahead just lingers in the air!

My kids have Spring Fever, too, but they kindly took the time to answer a few questions before running out the door! Here are their answers to April's edition of The Kids Behind The Blog:

DSC_0416

What is your favorite thing about Spring?

Liam (Age 3): "Play!"

Liliana (Age 5): "My favorite thing about Spring is...going out to play!"

Alexandria (Age 10): "It rains, and it's nice and pretty outside."

Dylan (Age 12): "The warm weather."

Mom Thoughts: Well, this is going to be a straightforward interview...

DSC_0101

If April showers bring May flowers what do May flowers bring?

Liam (Age 3): "Mama!"

Liliana (Age 5): "Honey?!? Because bees and butterflies come and get honey from the flowers!"

Alexandria (Age 10): "Ummm. Leprechauns? I don't know!"

Dylan (Age 12): "Fun outside."

Mom Thoughts: SERIOUSLY? Not a single one of you said pilgrims?!? 3 out of 4 of you told that joke over and over and over and over again at Thanksgiving!

DSC_0123

What does a flower need to grow?

Liam (Age 3): "Shhhhhh..."

Liliana (Age 5): "Rain."

Alexandria (Age 10): "Water."

Dylan (Age 12): "Water."

Mom Thoughts: Obviously Liam wants me to shut up.

DSC_0145

Do you like that it's starting to get warmer or do you like the cold and snow better?

Liam (Age 3): "Outside!!!"

Liliana (Age 5): "I like when it's hot."

Alexandria (Age 10): "I like that it's starting to get warmer."

Dylan (Age 12): "I like that it's getting warmer BY FAR."

Mom Thoughts: A sure sign that we need to move south!

DSC_0005

What do you want to do over your Spring Break?

Liam (Age 3): "I don't know."

Liliana (Age 5): "Hmm...let me think about that. You bet! I like to have playdates with my friends! Mom, can we actually do that with Charlie?"

Alexandria (Age 10): "I want to lay in bed and rest my arm. I want to get this thing off."

Dylan (Age 12): "Swim, play basketball, jump on the trampoline and hang out with friends."

Mom Thoughts: I like Lexie's plan. Hey, kids, let's all lay in bed and rest our arms!

DSC_0372

What is your favorite thing about Easter?

Liam (Age 3): "I don't know. Jump jump jump! Sneeze!" (Or in his own words, "I duh-know. Ju Ju Jup! Sneeeeeeeeeeeee!")

Liliana (Age 5): "My favorite thing about Easter is having an Easter Hunt!"

Alexandria (Age 10): "That we get presents from the Easter Bunny." *Smiles.* "Yeah. Just because I'm ten years old doesn't mean I'm not allowed to believe." (She doesn't.)

Dylan (Age 12): "That I get to spend time with family and friends."

Mom Thoughts: Liam clearly wins for best answer of the day!

These interviews are one of my favorite things to do each month! I love how Dylan and Lexie are good sports and still participate, even though they are cool tweens now. I just love hearing all of their thoughts, and I love to record their answers, exactly how they say them!
