Arctic Sensory Bin for Indoor Winter Sensory Play

Arctic Sensory Bin - Indoor Winter Sensory Play

This post contains affiliate links. If you click through, and make a purchase, I will earn a commission. Everything I recommend has been tested by me or my family!

The calendar might say it's Winter, but Mother Nature is a bit confused! Our weather has been all over the place lately. Last Monday, it was 65 degrees and sunny, and on Friday, we woke up to 4 inches of snow. Just two days later, all the snow has melted, and it's raining and in the high 40's. No matter the weather, we decided to make the Arctic our theme for this month's sensory bins!

I'm sure you already know this, but we are big fans of sensory play here! So much that we actually have a sensory table in our living room, and allow the kids to engage in messy play. Play is such an important part of early learning, and there are so many benefits of sensory play. I would rather have my kids explore a sensory bin than sit in front of the TV or iPad!

This month, we have been talking about the Arctic and the animals that live there. Even when my kids are in school, I believe in learning within the home as well. In addition to creating an Arctic world for my kids to explore, we read books about Arctic animals (National Geographic Kids has some great options), and there are some fun documentaries on Netflix and Disney+ to help kids learn more about the Arctic!

Water Beads & Soap Foam Sensory Bin - A Sensory Play Experience for Kids of All Ages

Water Beads & Soap Foam Sensory Bin

It's the first weekend of Summer, the weather is beautiful, and we're so excited to be outside! The only problem is our hose is temporarily out of commision, so water activities are a no go right now. Cooling down with a Water Beads & Soap Foam Sensory Bin was a fun alternative!

My kids are obsessed with water beads! I don't really blame them. They really are fun to play with. There's a reason they put them in gel masks now! ;) Plus they are super inexpensive, and a little goes a long way!

We are big fans of sensory play, and I'm a proponent of letting kids get messy and learn through play. Play really does matter, and introducing sensory experiences at a young age is really important. Sensory play helps kids learn with all of their senses, AND helps them work on their motor skills! Water Beads are a super cool sensory bin filler, and even babies can play (with supervision). Supercharging it with foam soap makes this bin extra fun!

Egg-cellent Easter Sensory Bin

Egg-cellent Easter Sensory Bin

Liam and Lily love sensory bins! We have a big collection of sensory bin fillers, and I try to rotate through themed bins twice a month. Sensory play is my secret weapon for those inevitable "I'm bored" moments! Our current Sensory Bin encourages egg-cellent Easter sensory play!

Spooky Black Glitter Putty {A Year of Color}

Spooky Black Glitter Putty - Easy to make, hours of fun! #sensoryplay #putty #halloween

If your kids are anything like mine, they probably love to make slime, putty and play dough! My crew is always adding glue, borax, cornstarch and flour to my grocery list, and sometimes I think it would be best to just buy it in bulk. I try not to complain too much, because at least they love science and experiments! We had yet to do a Halloween craft or activity this year, so the timing was perfect for this month's theme for A Year of Color!

The Road Trip Survival Kit Caddy for Kids

The Road Trip Survival Kit Caddy for Kids

DISCLOSURE: As a Nuby Parent Blogger, I received the cups included in the kits free for review. All opinions are 100% my own.

In less than one month, we will be making the 8 hour road trip to the beach for our family vacation! We are SO excited, but keeping four kids happy in the car can sometimes be a challenging task, especially when you get stuck in traffic for 5 additional hours (been there). It's never too early to prepare, so I created a Road Trip Survival Kit Caddy for each of my kids!

Road Trip Survival Kit

Dylan, Lexie, Lily and Liam are typically very well behaved on road trips. We recently made the 4 1/2 hour drive to Michigan with Lily and Liam, and they were excellent travelers! It was the easiest road trip ever!

Road Trip Ideas for Kids

The drive to the beach is almost twice as long, and even longer if we hit traffic. Netflix, iPads, iPods and our activity trays are must haves, but with the road trip caddy, they can have entertainment AND necessities within easy reach! (And mom gets a break!)

The Road Trip Survival Kit Caddy for Kids - Road Trip Ideas

I originally saw the use of caddies for road trips a few years ago on Pinterest. They were used to hold meals in the car, so I bought some for that purpose 2 years ago, and we never ended up using them. When I was recently perusing my favorite spot - AKA The Target Dollar Spot - I came across large shower caddies. As I filled my cart with what seemed like a million extra items, the idea for a road trip survival kit caddy was born!

This idea is so simple, and you can tailor it to the unique needs of your child. Start with one large shower caddy, then fill it with fun, age appropriate items, and all the necessities. The caddies can be found at the dollar store, but Target currently has larger, sturdy caddies in the The Dollar Spot. They were the perfect size for our survival kits!

(I'm just sharing the caddies I created for Lily and Liam, because Lexie and Dylan's caddies aren't as exciting!  Almost every item used was found in the Target Dollar Spot, and the travel and craft sections at Target.)

Road Trip Ideas for Kids

Here are the items I chose for our Road Trip Survival Kit Caddies:

NECESSITIES

  • Hand Sanitizing Wipes (I chose gentle ones that are safe to use on faces, too.)
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Tissues
  • Sandwich bags (Used to hold garbage or small items,)
  • Sunglasses

CREATE

  • Dry Erase Lap Boards ($1 at the Target Dollar Spot)
  • Window markers (Drawing on the car windows can be extra fun!)
  • Coloring Kits ($3 each at the Target Dollar Spot)
  • Chalkboard Laptops ($3 each at the Target Dollar Spot)

EAT & DRINK

Road Trip Ideas for Kids

These 12 oz straw cups from Nuby are perfect for  on the go, which means they are a great choice for road trips! Created for kids over the age of 18 months, they are available in 6 different prints. Lily flipped for the flamingo print (her favorite animal at the zoo), while the print on Liam's cup is made for a beach vacation (although we hope to avoid seeing sharks)!

The soft silicone No-Spill Straw keeps things from getting messy, and the flip top keeps the straw clean when the cup isn't in use. The Thirsty Kids Flip It Boost is made from durable Tritan plastic from Eastman, so it holds up in the hands of my Toddler Tornado. The easy grip design is great for Liam's little hands, and the fact that the cups are BPA free makes me happy!

The Nuby Thirsty Kids Flip-It Boost 12 oz water canteen is coming soon to Babies R Us!

MESS-FREE PLAY

  • Modeling Clay ($1.99 at Target. It doesn't crumble like play dough, and is fun to mold.)
  • Silly Putty (Same price, same idea. The Glow in the Dark formula makes it more exciting!)
  • Felt play sets ($3 at the Target Dollar Spot. Folds up small for easy portability!)
  • Gel Clings ($1 each at the Target Dollar Spot. My kids love to create scenes on the car windows!)
  • Road Trip Bingo (I found this old school bingo game for $1 each at the Target Dollar Spot. It's fun and easy to play. No extra pieces needed!)
  • Books (My kids love to read, so surprising them each with a new book usually does the trick!)
The Road Trip Caddy for Kids - Non Messy Play Ideas for Kids

Lily and Liam got a sneak peek of what was in their caddies, and they were begging to dig in! In four short weeks, we will be on our way to Virginia Beach, and they can finally enjoy them. Here's hoping The Road Trip Survival Caddy keeps all of our kids occupied for the 8+ hour drive!

How To Make a Construction Pit for Kids: An Easy & Inexpensive DIY

How to make a construction pit for kids - an easy and inexpensive DIY

Over the past two years, I've been working hard to turn our backyard into an inviting space for my kids. Of course, I have dozens of projects on my to do list and not enough time to complete even a fraction of them! I did, however, manage to create a fun construction pit for my kids in 10 short minutes, for less than $20. The end result was an instant hit!

Backyard Construction Pit

This DIY backyard project is very easy to do and inexpensive! It definitely helped that we already had a space for it, but creating the border can be very simple. Creating our construction pit only took a few minutes of time, and the kids loved it so much, that it made me regret not doing it sooner!

Easy & Inexpensive DIY Construction Pit for Kids

This DIY Construction Pit can be completed in just a few simple steps! The finished project is like a large sandbox with a fun twist!

The first thing you need to do is find a spot for your construction pit and create the border. I decided to use the built in sandbox space at the bottom of our wooden swingset. It was filled with mulch and held our plastic sandbox, but since it was already framed, I moved out the sandbox and got to work!

Once you find the spot, making the border is easy. Although you could build a frame by measuring and nailing pieces of wood together, it's even easier to use logs, large rocks or bricks. That also gives it a more natural feel!

After the border is built, all you need to do is fill it!

Backyard Construction Pit

Supplies:

  • Bags of small rocks or gravel
  • Shallow planter
  • Potting soil or mulch

I opted to use sand pebbles because they were large and smooth. I used 5 bags for the 16 square feet space, and at just $3 a bag, it was a steal!

How To:

  1. Place the shallow planter in the middle of the construction pit.
  2. Empty the bags of rocks into the construction pit and use a rake to spread them evenly. Make sure the rocks are level with the top of the planter.
  3. Fill the shallow planter with potting soil or mulch, so your kids have a place to dig easily. (This could also be filled with water!)
  4. Place construction vehicles inside the construction pit. (Plastic sand toys work great!)

Liam and Lily immediately fell in love with this incredibly easy to make Construction Pit! Even my too-cool tweens were spotted doing some digging. And just FYI, this construction pit is not just for boys!

I made the construction pit on Sunday and my kids have already logged in hours playing in it. My always barefoot, truck-loving, mess-making boy is in his glory, and Lily loves digging with the construction vehicles! It's truly one of the easiest, most fun play spaces I've added to our backyard! Who wants to come over to play?

9 Awesome Playtime Ideas for Kids of All Ages with EZPZ {Featuring The Baby Cubby}

DISCLOSURE: I received some of the products below from The Baby Cubby in exchange for this post. All opinions are 100% my own.

We are so excited that Spring has arrived! The longer, warmer, sunnier days are amazing, but it's also the start of our rainy season. While a little bit of rain doesn't chase us indoors, there are days that trap us inside all day long. This time of year, I always find myself searching for new playtime ideas to keep my crew busy on rainy days!

I always encourage crafting, creating, building, sensory play, baking and perfecting fine motor skills. I love it when my kids can entertain themselves creatively, and I found the perfect item that helps promote independent play: the EZPZ Flower Play Mat! I found it while browsing the awesome selection of toys at The Baby Cubby. It's a new addition in our home and it's simply amazing!

Liam, Lily and Lexie use this 100% silicone suction play mat every single day, and they love coming up with new ways to play!

Here are a few of our favorite playtime ideas:

9 Awesome Playtime Ideas for Kids of All Ages

PLAY DOUGH

Sensory Play is so important for all kids, but it's especially helpful for Liam. Squeezing the play dough strengthens his hands, and using the play dough tools helps build his fine motor skills. I love to give him straws to stick in the play dough, too. It's a great fine motor activity!

DSC_0386

FINE MOTOR PLAY

Liam does a lot of casual therapy at home. Fine motor play is part of his daily repertoire and we have a bunch of items in our rotation to keep him from getting bored. Dropping pieces of drinking straws into a small container with a hole in the lid is a great at-home fine-motor activity! You can see more homemade ideas HERE

LEGO PLAY

My kids love playing with Lego sets, but the truth is, the pieces scatter everywhere and get lost, and my kids get frustrated. The non-slip EZPZ Play Mat is a game changer for this activity. Not only does it offer a great building surface, but the compartments in the flower separate the Lego pieces perfectly!

CUPCAKE DECORATING

Lexie loves to bake! Decorating cupcakes and cookies is one of her favorite activities, and using this mat for this purpose is genius. All of the items she needs to decorate her cupcakes are within easy reach, and the BPA/BPS/PVC/Phthalate Free mat is safe for food. It gets bonus points for easy cleanup. Instead of washing a bunch of bowls that hold her decorating supplies, there's just one item to wash!

BUILDING WITH BLOCKS

Block Play is a great activity that most kids enjoy! It also helps to build those vital fine motor skills. Magnetic Blocks are the perfect choice for younger kids like Liam. It's easy for him to get frustrated when his creations keep falling down, but the magnetic blocks keep their form, even if they tip over! (The Tegu 8-Piece Pocket Pouch is a great choice, and it's perfect to slip into your bag for on the go use. These blocks recently kept Liam entertained at parent teacher conferences!)

See...no tears, even when your pet bunny interrupts playtime!

PAINTING

Lily and Lexie love to paint! The flower on this play mat holds 5 different colors of paint and water for rinsing the brushes, and the mat fits a standard piece of paper. It's such a great tool to use while they create their masterpieces!

COLORING

Coloring is something kids of all ages love to do! A few crayons and pieces of paper can spark hours of creativity!

DSC_0345

STRINGING BEADS

My girls love to make bracelets using beads! This mat holds the string in place as my girls thread the beads. Chunkier beads threaded onto pipe cleaners is a great alternative for Liam, and picking up the beads helps strengthen his pincer grasp!

SUCTION BUILDING

What is it about suction toys that captivates kids? Squigz are such a fun choice for fine motor and building play. All four of my kids, from age 3 to age 12, love them!

It's so easy to work up a big appetite during playtime! There's nothing better than a great snack after all that hard play!

The EZPZ Mini Mat is the perfect addition to snack time at home. This compartment suction tray sticks to the table and prevents Liam from tossing his plate when he's finished eating. And thanks to the awesome travel bag, it's perfect for on the go, too!

Hours of playtime paired with delicious food is the perfect combination for a fun day indoors!

This year, I visited The Baby Cubby for our new playtime items! All of the items available at The Baby Cubby are thoroughly researched. These items are the highest rated and reviewed items out there, so it takes all the guess work out of choosing a quality product for your child.

The Baby Cubby has a retail location in Lindon, Utah, but their great selection of quality items in every department is available online, too. Although I would love to have the store nearby, their online retail site is a great alternative. Ordering is easy, and the items ship quickly!

I had no difficulty finding a few fun items that I knew my kids would love, and those items did not disappoint in any way. They have already provided hours of fun for my kids!
