Strawberry Picking: A Favorite Summer Tradition

Every year, in the middle of June, we head to a nearby farm for a favorite Summer tradition: Strawberry Picking!

Strawberry Picking is our usual group outing to kick off Summer. Going with friends definitely makes the tradition more fun!

Last Wednesday, I herded 5 little humans out the door as quickly as possible and battled crazy traffic to get to the farm in time to meet our friends. As soon as I got out of the SUV, I realized that we forgot one vital thing...the baskets! I even reminded the kids several times before we rushed out the door. But we still forgot them. Of course.

Thanks to the organization system in my SUV, I had a tote filled with beach toys. SO. Beach pails it was!  I started laughing as our friends walked toward us with beach pails in their hands, too. Frazzled moms unite!

Since it was a weekday morning, the farm wasn't very crowded yet. We got our baskets-er, beach pails-weighed and rode the rickety wagon up to the strawberry fields.

It was the noisiest wagon ride.  I'm not sure why...

As soon as we got to the field, everyone scattered in different directions and Liam kept trying to run back down to the farm. It was an adventure!

Liam finally stopped exploring and decided to see what everyone else was doing! After watching his big sister, Lexie, and his beloved cousin, Aubrey, for a few minutes, he caught on to what he was supposed to be doing!

After he tired of that, he decided to spread a little love!

The big kids worked so hard picking the perfect strawberries. In less than 20 minutes, my crew picked 5 lbs of strawberries! It was definitely time to head back down to the farm!

By that point, the kids were hot, tired and thirsty but that didn't stop the noise on the wagon ride back down!

  2. I love that Lily had the perfect dress to wear. I don't even know of any local strawberry patches around here. I keep thinking about planting my own but I dont really have a great spot and I assume all of the bunnies would eat them anyways :(.

    1. That's a bummer that you don't have anything like that nearby. Planting them would be fun...maybe in a raised bed?
The dress was Lexie's. She wore it on our very first trip to go strawberry picking!

  3. Your daughter's strawberry outfit is the cutest! I've heard the best time to go to a berry farm is early, and I'm sure it helps with the heat, too, BUT that's one of the reasons we haven't gone yet. I have the hardest time getting my crew up & ready in the morning. Props to you for getting all your kiddos (plus some) exploring early in the morning!

  5. I have had strawberry picking on my summer bucket list for AGES and we still haven't ever gone. I was dead set that we were going to go this year, but the temps have been near 100 for the last 3 weeks here and I have no desire to strawberry pick when it's that flipping hot. Lol.

    1. They really are better than the ones they sell in the grocery store! Have a great time picking blackberries. I never take them to pick anything else, but I really should!

  7. Looks like so much fun! That would totally be me as well forgetting the baskets! Such luck you had all those sand pails in your car! Note to self--- add that to my emergency stash in the trunk!

    1. We haven't actually used them for sand play yet, but they sure were useful! I have to say, I'm glad I'm not alone with being forgetful!

  11. Aw, these pictures are amazing!!! We wanted to go while we were in Florida in April but their picking season had just ended. Wah! We don't have strawberry fields here(that I know of) so I guess we'll just be waiting for pumpkin season. This looks so fun though!!
