Cherokee

We recently visited our horse on the rainiest, stormiest day of the year!

Unfortunately, with 3 kids, I don't get to visit him much anymore.  Gone are the days when I would spend hours at the stable everyday, riding, training, and grooming.  Now I'm lucky if I get to see him once a month.   I miss him dearly, and really wish we had enough property to keep him at our house.

It didn't look promising for the visit we had planned.  But when I get a chance to go, I go!  This time, we were visiting my parents, and my mom offered to watch Lily while we went.

Luckily, there was a brief break, so Dylan, Lexie, and I headed out.  Lily was not too thrilled to be left behind with my mom!

I have so much guilt about not seeing him much. I wish I could give him more, but I can't get rid of him.  My parents gave him to me as a Christmas/Birthday gift in 1993. We grew up together, and I have so many fond memories involving him.  Getting rid of him would be like losing a family member.  So our monthly visits have to do for now.

The kids love going to the barn with me.  As soon as Cherokee hears our voices calling him, he lifts his head, and starts walking toward us.  Of course, we spoil him with many treats!

As usual, he was so happy to see us.  We didn't get much time to visit, because another big storm was rolling in.  The kids ran back to the car, and I said a reluctant goodbye.  It is always so hard to leave him.  What makes it harder, is him following behind me, looking so sad and pitiful.

I always leave, wishing I could bring him home with me.  When I glance back before getting in the car, he is always looking for us.  It breaks my heart every time.

I love that boy.  He was, and always will be, my first love!

  3. Your post pulled at my heart strings. I had a welsh pony growing up and that horse was my best friend. I vowed never to sell him but I out grew him and started riding my sisters horse when she left for college.

When it was my turn to leave for school I ended up selling Stormy to a wonderful family with small children. It broke my heart but at the same time It was good for him to have the love and attention I once gave him.

Years later, I went to go see him and his dapple grey had turned white. I called his name and he remembered me.

I cried as I hugged him knowing it would probably be the last time I would see him.

I feel your pain he is a beautiful horse and I understand the bond you have.

  5. Stupid pregnancy hormones. That post just made me cry.

There's just something magical about a horse's eyes...so soulful and intent.

  6. My horses don't get much attention either anymore - and they're right here at the house! I did ride the past 2 weeks, but it had been like a year since I'd ridden! I miss it too. Glad you got to visit him - I'm sure he enjoyed it!

  7. That sounds so wonderful! For some reason I could not see the pictures. I will check back in later so I can see them. That must be so hard not to be able to see your horse as often. Sadly, as our lives change there are some things that change with it, even if we do not want it to. I know you gave so much love to your horse while growing up together. You are now passing on your love to your children. Have a good day my friend!

  9. totally tugged on my heart to read this... I know the feeling. It's weird to go from daily ridnig and weekend horse shows to seeing a horse and riding once a month AT MOST... We'll have more time when our kids are older, so we need to cherish them now, but not lose our passion!

    Cherokee's a cutie!

  14. It always hurt to be far from something we treasured dearly. It was good of you to visit him whenever you have time. He's a very special pet.

  15. Aww, I know how that feels! I drove to the stables every single day - sometimes twice a day to see my hellion of a first horse!

And whenever I miss living closer to the grocery store, the bank, etc... I just look out into my backyard and see my girl and know that it is worth it.

Hope you can bring him closer someday!
