Dirt Dessert Cups for Kids

Celebrate Earth Day with Dirt Dessert Cups for Kids!

Happy Earth Day! It's not really a holiday, but I like to do something fun to acknowledge the day. My kids are all about desserts, so I decided to whip up an easy batch of Dirt Dessert Cups to celebrate! (I even made a gluten free alternative for Liam!)

On a more serious note, we're big fans of this planet, so we continuously make changes as a family so we can work toward a more green-living lifestyle. We choose environmentally-friendly companies and products as often as possible, and we try to reuse or repurpose everything we buy. (You just might see that in the recipe below!) And every year, we try to give back to our planet in some way on Earth Day!

Now back to the regularly scheduled fun post...

Dylan, Lexie, Lily and Liam keep me plenty busy, so I don't have time to make complicated recipes. Dirt Dessert Cups are incredibly quick and easy to make, and for some reason my kids LOVE them! And what better choice for Earth Day (or any day) than deliciously messy dirt?!?

Dirt Dessert Cups

With only 4 ingredients, this recipe is a cinch to whip up!  It's really easy to make, so it's a great recipe to make with kids!

Dirt Dessert Cups

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Large Box of Chocolate Pudding Mix
  • 3 Cups of Milk
  • 10 Oreo Cookies (with cream removed), crushed
  • Gummy Worms (We opted for Black Forest Organic Gluten Free Gummy Worms.)
  • 4 Dessert Cups (This is where I choose reusable!)

MAKE IT:

1. Prepare the pudding mix as directed on the box. (Bonus points if you have a cute helper!)

2. Separate the oreos, scrape the cream off, place the pieces in a bag, and crush with a rolling pin! Yes, I realize you can buy Oreo crumbs, but we spend an unbelievable amount of money on groceries each week, and it makes more sense for me to steal 10 Oreos out of the package! (Just for the record, whoever said the cream is the best part obviously didn't eat just the center of the Oreos. I felt nauseous after just one!) If you want to skip a step and buy the crumbs, more power to you. Absolutely no judgement here!

3. Fill the dessert cups 3/4 of the way with chocolate pudding. (Think REUSABLE!)

4. Sprinkle an inch of the cookie "dirt" on top of the pudding.

5.  Bury the gummy "worms' halfway in the dirt, leaving just their heads peeking out!

Gluten Free Alternative:

Follow the steps above, but substitute the cookies with gluten free Chocolate Vanilla Cream Cookies (Liam loves Glutino), and make sure the pudding mix and gummy worms are gluten free! We add a sticker to the bottom of Liam's cup(s) to tell it apart from the rest!
