The Christmas Spirit

I have a confession.  I'm a total Grinch this year.  I'm just not enjoying the holiday season as much as I typically do.

I'm not sure if it's the constant busyness, the unseasonably warm weather, or the fact that I've been sick since before Thanksgiving. It's hard to rest and get better when you literally can't stop! There are just so many activities and obligations for my 4 kids right now! I feel like I'm just going through the motions for my favorite holiday.

I'm trying desperately to get out of my funk.  Thankfully, my cough finally seems to be improving, and we've had a few events over the past week that helped give me a glimpse of that Christmas Spirit that has been missing all month!

First up was the warmest Christmas Parade we've ever experienced! We go to our town parade/light up night every single year.  It's ridiculously short, but the kids love it, and they get to visit with Santa after the parade.

The parade was on Saturday and it was in the high sixties. That's so unusual for Pittsburgh this time of year.  We were stripping off layers of clothing as we waited for the parade to begin!

Grant's mom and Nannie met us for the parade, and our some of our friends joined us, too.  It just so happened to be Nannie's 91st Birthday!  She's the coolest 91 year old around.  She's still sharp as a tack, perfectly put together, and she races around town in her orange Camaro adorned with her initials!

The kids grabbed some drinks, cupcakes, and hot cocoa, then Dylan wandered off with some friends from school.  The girls and Liam are still happy to stay with their family and friends! They had plenty of fun while we waited for the parade to start!

It seemed like it took a long time, but we finally heard the parade heading our way! Everyone rejoined our group and the kids got ready to catch some candy!

I must have bumped my camera just before the parade began, and the dial shifted out of manual.  I didn't even realize it until I got home, but all my pictures after that were "off."  I was bummed, but they still turned out cute!

Liam was a HUGE fan of the parade! He clapped his way through it!

The parade only lasted about 5 minutes, but the kids enjoyed it!  The highlight, of course, was Santa arriving at the very end of the parade!

We watched Santa light up the town, then got in line to visit with Santa.  Even though we were near the front of the line, people filtered in on all sides, and we ended up waiting a long time! It was worth it, though!

Liam had no fear of Santa.  By the end of their visit, he was grinning and clapping along with Santa's elves! Santa told us he was a big fan of Liam!

We said our goodbyes to Santa, and Liam took off down empty Main Street. We took that as our cue to pack up our things and head to our next destination!

That evening, we had a Christmas party with our friends, and I didn't even take a single picture.  Oops!

Lily had her snack day at Pre-K on Wednesday.  I let her pick something festive, and she ended up choosing a very time-consuming treat.  I did it, though, because after Pre-K, snack days are over!  The only free time I had was at 12:30 AM on Wednesday. One hour and 20 snowmen later, I headed to bed!

After I picked Lily up from school on Wednesday, we headed to the park.  It was 60 degrees, so we had to take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather while we had the chance!

That evening, our entire family attended Dylan's 5th grade band/chorus winter concert!

Fifth Grade is the first year the students can join band, and I'm really glad Dylan opted to join.  I think sports AND music is very important! Dylan chose the trumpet, but wants to switch to strings next year.  Dylan was in the choir club last year, which was optional, but in 5th Grade, choir is mandatory.

My parents and Grant's mom and Nannie came to the concert, too. Dylan was very happy they came to see him.

Although I didn't get many pictures, the concert was great!  The band played 6 songs and each song was just 30 seconds long. They were surprisingly good considering they have only been playing together for one month and only 3 days with their new band teacher (their regular teacher is on maternity leave)!

I honestly couldn't even spot Dylan in band, but I did capture a few videos.  I can't wait to see how they sound in the Spring after several more months of learning!

Lily and Liam were really well behaved through the entire concert, so I was actually able to relax and enjoy it!  I'm thankful for that!

I'm proud of myself.  I only cried two or three times. (Maybe more, but who's judging?) I just can't believe I have an 11 year old.  He grew up in the blink of an eye, and he didn't even need my help getting ready.  He chose his outfit, put on his crooked tie, gelled his hair, and put on cologne.  I can't handle this!

We had a great evening cheering on our sweet boy!   We're so proud of him!!! (And our end of the concert family photo is about as real as it gets. Two sleepy kids and two sleepy parents!)

It was a fun week!  We have a LOT of shopping and Christmas activities ahead of us over the next week.  I'm not quite sure how we're going to fit it all in before Christmas, but we'll do our best!

A Deserving Mom

It's a #BlackStainless beauty!  I was never a big fan of stainless steel.  A lot of the accents in my kitchen are black, and I thought the traditional stainless steel would look too clinical.  Call me naive, but I didn't even know Black Stainless Steel was an option!

This fridge, though..it's dreamy!  Not only is it dreamy, but it's also extremely functional.  As a mom, I love the fact that it is fingerprint resistant (we currently have SO many of those on our fridge) and the fact that the black finish is magnetic! Currently, my kitchen is red.  I absolutely love it, and have no plans to change it. We also have ample cabinet space, but the cabinets need to be refinished. My dream is to replace all the trim and baseboards, paint the cabinets white, and get new counter tops!  I would love to put in an island, too, but for now, my "island" is a gigantic play kitchen.  A kitchen within a kitchen.  Gotta love it! #momlife

My family spends a lot of time in our kitchen.  Our table isn't just meant for meals.  The kids sit there to play, create projects, and do homework.  Our family gathers around the table to dye Easter eggs, carve pumpkins, and bake cookies.  We need a simple, open, functional kitchen to keep up with our lifestyle!

Dear Santa

The countdown is on.  There are only 10 days left until Christmas.  TEN!  My family is desperately trying to fit in all of our favorite Christmas traditions, and we're running out of time!

Writing letters to Santa is one of those traditions.  Everybody has an opinion on Santa, of course. Our children know the real reason for the season, but Santa is also a part of our celebration.  Santa just adds to the magic of childhood, and we all know that childhood is fleeting!

Every year, my kids think really hard about what they would like for Christmas, then they sit down to write their letters to Santa.  This is usually an independent activity, but this year, I decided to start a new tradition!

Instead of working on Santa letters alone, I decided to make it a family activity.  I set up a Hot Cocoa Bar next to the Christmas Tree, told the kids to gather around the tree, and I passed out everything they needed to craft their letters!

 

The kids were excited to write their letters, but they were looking forward to the hot cocoa, too!  I used a set of mugs that belonged to my Grandma, and the cups that held the toppings were from my childhood. It was a nice walk down memory lane for me!

Instead of using plain paper this year, I found some really cute Santa Letters on Blue Mountain! Although Blue Mountain gives you the option to create the Santa Letter on the website and print, I opted to have the kids write the letters on their own!

You may have noticed that Liam was strapped safely in his high chair.  There was a good reason!  The Hot Cocoa Bar would have been too much of a temptation and the letters would have been crumpled.  I gave him his hot cocoa early, so he didn't mind much.  It turns out that shaking hot cocoa all over yourself is a REALLY fun activity!

While Liam splashed around in his hot cocoa mess, Dylan, Lexie, and Lily worked really hard! 

Dylan, who now believes in the spirit of Santa, was a good role model for his younger siblings! Lily signed her name first, told us exactly what she wanted her letter to say, then happily signed her name again.  Lexie finished her letter quickly and took over Liam's letter.  Before long, all four letters were written!

Dylan, Lexie, Lily, and Liam celebrated the start of our new Santa Letter Tradition with some hot cocoa!

I collected the letters, and we put them in our special Santa Letter pouch.  It's hanging on our tree and the letters will stay safe until we go visit Santa! 

Although I captured some picture-perfect moments of a fun new tradition, I just want to point out that life isn't always perfect! We did have to briefly pause for this:

No worries.  We all recovered quickly!

 Dylan, Lexie, Lily, and Liam really enjoyed the new Santa Letter Tradition. They happily wrote their letters under the cozy glow of the Christmas Tree, and they celebrated with hot cocoa! This tradition is a keeper!

Don't judge. It's a matter of safety for everyone involved.

Happy Friday!  I don't know about you, but I am so relieved that it's the weekend!

I decided a short update post was a good idea for today.  After nearly 3 weeks of being sick and weeks of constant activities and events, I am physically and mentally drained! Oh, and can you believe Christmas is TWO weeks away?!?

Here's a glimpse of life currently: 

WATCHING: Grant and I are making our way through Boardwalk Empire (we're on season 3...so good!) and I'm watching Switched at Birth (my guilty pleasure) on Netflix.  As for shows that are currently airing, we're watching Fargo and Homeland.

LISTENING: Christmas music 24/7!

WEARING:  It was sweaters, boot socks, and boots every day, but then the weather in Pittsburgh decided to return to Spring.  I'm not complaining!  I hate the cold, so 50 degree weather in December is VERY welcome!

EATING: Eh, I haven't had much of an appetite lately.  I still meal plan every week, though.  My sweet friend delivered some delicious cheesecake bites this week, and they're almost gone! I definitely prefer the sweets.

CREATING: Shopping lists for Christmas, blog posts, Christmas cards, and a photo display for Lily's preschool.

SHOPPING: Uh, Christmas presents! I only have a few gifts, a few stocking stuffers, 1 Christmas outfit, and the Christmas Eve pajamas and book bought. I am so behind this year, and I still have no idea what I'm going to buy!

WORRYING: I'm stressing over a situation that occurred at Lily's preschool.  I wrote a blog post about it, but I was feeling really emotional, so I'm going to hold off on publishing it for a while!

PLANNING: All things Christmas!

GRANT: Grant works overtime almost every day (it's a busy time of year in the mortgage industry) and he has an hour and a half round-trip commute. I only see him for a few hours each day.

DYLAN: Dylan started basketball last week!  He really enjoys it so far.  He started playing the trumpet this year, and has his first band  concert next week!

LEXIE:  Lexie continues to excel in school.  She loves her teacher this year, and wants to go every single day, even if she isn't feeling well! It's so easy when school is fun. All Lexie talks about is starting cheerleading.  She's not happy that it's many months away!

LILY:  Despite the situation I mentioned, Lily loves preschool!  She's also excited that her weekly Storytime starts up again at the beginning of January.

LIAM: Liam is a BUSY kid. He definitely keeps me on my toes!  He's currently experiencing a language explosion. I feared he would be nonverbal when he was born, but he is very vocal!

BLOGGING:  Coming up on the blog over the next 7 days are lots of Christmas posts, including Christmas Traditions and an Ultimate Christmas Movie list, and 2 giveaways! 

WHAT'S GOING ON OVER THE NEXT WEEK:  We're going to our town's Christmas parade/light up night tomorrow,  then going to a Christmas party.  On Sunday, we're visiting Grant's grandma for her 91st birthday!  Dylan's band/chorus concert is on Wednesday, and his DARE graduation is on Friday. We also need to fit in quite a few Christmas activities.

Kids of ALL abilities can be Little Movers!

"Where is Liam?" Those words escape my mouth approximately 50 times a day.  Perhaps more.

My 27 month old is a toddler tornado.  Tiny but mighty.  Perfectly capable.  Constantly on the move (and usually giving me panic attacks). NOTHING slows him down. Not even that extra chromosome.

When we were given the life-changing diagnosis right after Liam was born, it was easy to focus on all the things he wouldn't be able to do.

The doctor's words rang in our ears. "Approximately half of babies with Down syndrome have a heart defect." "Feeding problems are common." "Less active." "Multitude of health issues." "Expect developmental and cognitive delays." "Will not walk until age 2-4."

While we grieved the loss of the baby we expected, Liam was determined to show us everything he COULD do.

At just 24 hours old, Liam rolled to his side.  The doctors were divided.  Two thought he had Down syndrome based on a few physical characteristics while the other two said absolutely not.

Obviously, it was confirmed that Liam did have Down syndrome.  But he continued to amaze us.  He was 100% healthy. He was always happy. He rolled over completely at 3 weeks old, and when he was 6 months old, our tiny 10 lb baby was able to stand with support.  He cruised at 12 months.  He began taking independent steps just before he turned 18 months old. It took him about 5 months to string together more than 2-3 steps, but he did walk before he turned 2.

It did take a lot of work to get him moving.  Countless hours of therapy in our home.  Strategic placement of toys that engaged him. Bribery with yogurt melts. Constant encouragement from his family.

But once he started moving, he never stopped. The kid who had so many limits placed upon him turned out to be more active than his "typical" siblings!  He has the scars to prove it.  Three of them, to be exact!

I remember feeling discouraged at times, especially when Liam's typical peers started hitting milestones before him.  But soon I learned to embrace the fact that he would do things in his own time frame.  As his friends ran circles around him, and their moms chased after them, I sat back and enjoyed my still, content little boy.  And now?  I'm the mom constantly running after her child!

Every child can be a Little Mover in their own way.  The advice I give to any new parent is this: Give your child time and stop worrying about achieving those milestones! Instead, focus on what they CAN do!
