Life Before Baby #5

Baby #5

As a mom, it seems like I measure time in life before baby arrived, and life after. I have been a mom for 14 1/2 years, and I truly can't remember what life was like BEFORE I had kids! Now here I am, trying to play catch up for the last year that flew by while I was pregnant or adjusting to life with five kids!

I was so sick during my pregnancy with Coen, just like I was with every other pregnancy. Every single day I battled morning sickness until the day I delivered him. When you are that sick, it's truly a struggle to make it through the day, let alone blog. BUT...I want to catch up on some of the life posts that slipped by while I was sick since this is partially a journal of our lives.

I did so well documenting weekly life for the first 6 weeks of 2019, and I'm determined to finish it. I'm definitely a visual storyteller (or so Facebook tells me), so I might not remember the exact details of the last two weeks before Coen was born, but with the help of all the pictures I took and my beloved Cozi calendar, I just might be able to do a somewhat decent job. All I know is that I was miserably pregnant for those last two weeks of my pregnancy. I was still sick, I was contracting all the time, and I knew my baby was huge. (Spoiler alert: I was right.) The next document life post I will be sharing is Coen's CRAZY birth story, so stay tuned!

School's Out for the Summer - The Last Week of the School Year

School's Out for the Summer!

School's out for the Summer! Dylan, Lexie, Lily, and Liam had their last day of school on Friday. They are now joining me and baby Coen at home until September 9th. The last week of the school year was a busy one, and although the last day of school was bittersweet, my crew is excited about the Summer ahead!

This past week included a fun event in our little town, a school kindness celebration, middle school graduation and a dance, an 8th Grade class trip to Cedar Point, Liam's annual eye exam, an oil change and car shopping, Lily's last dance class, the last day of school, a baseball game, sleepovers, and fireworks. I wish we had a lazy week ahead of us, but Lexie was asked to represent the school's STEAM program during the school board meeting tonight, Lily has a practice for the dance recital finale tomorrow, the dance recital rehearsal is on Thursday, Liam has an early baseball game on Saturday, and Father's Day and the dance recital is on Sunday. Gone are those lazy Summer days!

We are only four days into Summer Break and I can tell it's going to be a busy one! Kids are entering and leaving our house in a continuous loop for sleepovers/playdates. Did I also mention that Coen is rolling over EVERY time I put him down to sleep, then gets angry and starts screaming? Sleep just isn't happening for either of us! So many moms say that Summer is actually busier than the school year, and that seems to be the case this year.

Here's a glimpse at the last week of 8th Grade, 6th Grade, 2nd Grade, and Kindergarten..

Liam and the Very Special Arts Exhibit

Liam and The Very Special Arts Exhibit

Liam is 4th in the lineup of five kids. With three older siblings, he is always coming along to support them during their many activities, sports, and school events. Now that Liam is in Kindergarten, he has his OWN activities and school events, and it's our turn to support him!

This year, Liam's art teacher submitted his Kindergarten artwork to the Very Special Arts Exhibit. It  is currently on exhibit at Grove City College's Pew Fine Arts Center until April 17th, with artwork from other K-12 students in three counties. Very Special Arts is an international organization on arts and disability, and provides arts and educational opportunities for people with disabilities, while helping increase the access to art for everyone.

On Saturday, they hosted a reception for all the young artists who had artwork on display. It was a fun event, and such a special day for our sweet Liam!

The Chaos Crew's Weekly Recap

The Chaos Crew's Weekly Recap

Happy Monday! It actually IS a happy Monday, because my kids are off of school today, and my husband is off of work. I would love to say that we're having a relaxing day off, but Dylan has a date with his girlfriend (hold me), and I have a date with the grocery store. BUT...we get to sleep in, and that's a wonderful thing!

The second week of 2019 flew by in a whirlwind of busyness! Germs hit our home this week, too. Stomach cramps hit Lexie on Monday, and Lily on Tuesday. Thankfully, it only lasted a few hours for both of them, and didn't turn into anything else! On Wednesday night, I felt body aches and cold symptoms coming on, and I'm still fighting cold germs. Because I'm pregnant, it's hitting me hard, but it doesn't slow me down one bit! Then again, there's no time to slow down with 4 kids!

Here's a glimpse at our week...

The First Day of Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 6th Grade, and 8th Grade

The First Day of Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 6th Grade, and 8th Grade!

I'm back!!! After a nearly 3 week break from blogging, I figured it was time to get back to work. Over the course of those 19 days, we had a lovely family vacation at Myrtle Beach, and as soon as we returned home, it was time to go back to school. There was something else keeping me away, too, which I will be sharing soon. I'm going to kick off my return with a recap of a big day for my crew: The First Day of Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 6th Grade, and 8th Grade!

Although I missed blogging, I have to admit that the break was nice. I loved being able to focus on just my family! I have so much content lined up over the next few weeks, so I'm hitting the ground running today. I'm going to ease into it with one of the biggest changes for our family this year...sending all four of our children to the same school district, and having weekday mornings all to myself!

The past week was exhausting, but the school year is off to a great start! Although I was very nervous about the transition, Liam is THRIVING in Kindergarten. Lily moved to a new building, Lexie is in her last year of "elementary school" and Dylan will be heading to high school next year. All four of my kids are in different schools, so I'm adjusting to the new normal of juggling even more chaos! Back to school is always one of the busiest times of the year!

Life Lately

Life Lately...Mom Life with four kids and Down syndrome

I'm back! The past three weeks have been rough. Liam got sick on July 24th, and it took him over a week to bounce back, then I caught his germs. I haven't been that sick in many years. I literally stayed home for almost an entire week, and couldn't leave my bed or the couch. I'm still not 100%, but it's a huge improvement from last week!

Needless to say, I won't be posting a weekly recap this week. If I did, it would look something like this: Monday sick, Tuesday sick but had to run a few errands, Wednesday sick, Thursday sick, Friday sick but starting to feel better, Saturday and Sunday weak and exhausted. I only pulled out my camera once the entire week, and I didn't get anything done! Lily spent this past weekend at my parent's house, Dylan had a friend sleep over on Saturday night and he spent all day Sunday with us, and Lexie went to her friend's house on Sunday. I feel like the past three weeks of Summer passed by in a blur while Liam and I were sick!

We hit the ground running today (Monday)! Liam has his last three days of preschool this week, and we have so much to do to prepare for our upcoming beach vacation. I also have to get back to work, and catch up on some sponsored posts that had to be pushed aside while I was so sick. I have so much unfinished content in my drafts folder, but right now I only have the brainpower to focus on real life posts! I'll get back to focusing on content after I get back from vacation and the kids go back to school. So for now, let's chat...

The Countdown to Full Inclusion Kindergarten

The Countdown to Full Inclusion Kindergarten

When we received Liam's Down syndrome diagnosis, a lifetime of worries stretched out ahead of us. One of those worries was "What are we going to do when it's time for him to go to school?" That decision seemed SO far away, but the years passed by quickly, and soon, it was time to make that decision. We were completely torn about whether we would send Liam to full inclusion Kindergarten in the Fall, or have him go to preschool for one more year, but last week, we made our decision!

At the beginning of the year, I shared my thoughts about "redshirting" my child who has Down syndrome, and we have been undecided since then. So much so, that I signed the declaration to send him to Kindergarten, but never turned in the paperwork. If you would have asked me one week ago what our decision was, I would have told you that he would be going to preschool for one more year.

Although this is our first time dealing with special education concerns, we had to make a similar decision about sending Lily to Kindergarten when she was eligible. Just like Liam, her birthday fell just before the age cutoff for Kindergarten, which would make her one of the youngest in the class. We put a lot of thought into it, and decided NOT to redshirt Lily. It wasn't always easy, and she IS one of the youngest children in her grade (some students in her class were over a year older than her), but it was the right decision for her. However, we had to consider other factors with Liam, who has special needs.

Should I Redshirt My Child (Who Has Down Syndrome) For Kindergarten...Or Not?

Should I Redshirt My Child Who Has Down Syndrome For Kindergarten...Or Not? #downsyndrome #kindergarten #specialneeds #school

Almost 4 1/2 years have flown by since we first heard the words "We think he has Down syndrome." A lot has happened since then, but it doesn't feel like that many years have passed. Yet here we are, just 1 month away from Liam's Kindergarten transition meeting, and 8 months away from the start of Kindergarten. This can't be possible!

The Last Day(s) of School {AKA We Made It!}

The Last Day(s) of School

We made it! Our first year of having four kids in four different schools came to an end. The last day(s) of school are behind us, and it's officially Summer Break!

The year flew by, but it wasn't always easy. The truth is, it's often incredibly difficult to keep up with the academic and extracurricular schedules of four kids, especially when they all attend different schools! More deadlines and due dates were missed, and paperwork forgotten, than I care to admit. But we did it, and we ended the year successfully, so that's ALL that matters!

So what's a school year like with four kids? I'll break it down!

400+ outfits chosen the night before.

400+ lunches packed.

360 signatures in assignment books.

180+ hours helping with homework or quizzing kids for tests.

1,440 miles driven to and from kindergarten pick up.

30 hours spent in the kindergarten pick up line (O. M. G.).

1,300 miles driven to preschool drop off and preschool pick up.

18 hours spent in the preschool building during drop off and pick up.

15 hours spent waiting at the bus stop in the morning.

Thousands of dollars spent on clothing, books, school supplies, gifts for teachers, fundraisers, pictures, yearbooks, lunches, and school activities.

1 knocked out tooth, 1 broken wrist.

A whole lot of sick days. (It was the first year we have gone through this!)

6 teachers, 3 therapists, 5 parent teacher conferences, 1 IEP meeting.

3 concerts, 2 field trips, 15 school parties, 6 book fairs, 3 open houses, 3 field days.

4 thriving kids, 1 exhausted mama.

Let me just say, I am THRILLED to get a break from all that chaos!

Here's a quick glimpse at Dylan, Lexie, Lily and Liam's last days of school!

{LIAM}

Back To School Photos

This was a big year for Liam (and mama)! If you recall, I was very apprehensive about sending Liam to preschool so young. Much to my surprise, he thrived, and he absolutely loved school!

Liam attended a preschool for kids who have IEP's. I was also uncertain that it was the right place for him, but I don't regret my choice one bit. There were less than ten kids in his class, and his teacher was AMAZING. He received speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy at school, and he participated in so many fun activities and brought home adorable artwork and crafts almost every single day. He went to school three afternoons a week, and I felt 100% comfortable leaving him in the capable arms of his loving teacher.

Liam was the first of my kids to finish school. His last day was on May 25th, and Lily and I got to go to school with him, see him in action (he's a total ham and charmer, of course), and celebrate with his class by having an end of the school year party.

Last Day of Preschool

Nothing Down About It

It may have been his last day of the full school year, but he still has a few school days built into the Summer. Liam will attend preschool for three afternoons one week in June, one week in July, and one week in August. He will receive his therapies during each of those three weeks of school over the Summer, but he doesn't do outpatient therapy, so he will still be able to enjoy a Summer Break!

Back To School Photos

Unfortunately, at the end of the Summer, we will have to say goodbye to his amazing teacher. She is transferring to another school, and I am so upset about it! We were assured his new teacher is just as great, though. Plus, his longtime friend, Dolly, who is also rocking an extra chromosome will be in his class next year. I am relieved that he won't be the only child there who has Down syndrome, and I'm hoping for one more successful year before we make the switch to full inclusion!

Just look at how much he grew from the first day to the last!

{LILIANA}

Back To School Photos

It was a big year for Lily, too! She started Kindergarten as one of the youngest in her grade. She turned 5 just before the Kindergarten cutoff date, but we opted to send her. There were a few minor bumps in the road, mostly due to the fact that many of her classmates were almost or over a full year older than she was, but she is independent and determined.

She held her own, and even got into an infamous argument with a boy in her class who claimed he was stronger than John Cena. Of course, my very outspoken and bold daughter informed him that he was NOT stronger than John Cena because "John Cena has man muscles, and you do not have man muscles!" Gotta love her!

Lily loved all the fun, new experiences in Kindergarten. Some of her favorite things were recess, assemblies, book fairs, gym class, and field day, which was two days before school ended.

Back To School Photos

She ended the year strong, but wasn't ready to say goodbye to her friends and her teacher just yet. When I picked her up on her last day of school, she was pouting, and she told me she wasn't excited about school ending because she was really going to miss her friends and her teacher.

Back To School Photos

Next year, Lily will be heading to first grade, and half days of school will be a distant memory. For the first time ever, she will be away from me for full days, five days a week. I'm very sad about it, but she's excited, and I know she's going to love it! Lily says she's most excited about eating lunch in the cafeteria. It's the little things in life!

Kindergarten flew by, and this mama totally teared up while reading the note Lily's teacher wrote in her "Oh, the Places You'll Go" graduation edition book. My baby girl is growing up WAY too fast!

Oh The Places You'll Go

I don't feel like Lily changed too much from the first day to the last. She's a bit taller, she lost her second bottom middle tooth and got her top middle tooth knocked out, and her face looks a little bit older, but other than that, she looks very much the same! Adorable, outgoing and confident!

Lexie ROCKED 4th Grade! She is my incredibly kind, mature, hard-working child who always aims to please.  She tackles every task and assignment with everything she's got, and her teachers always rave about how she is the model student. I never worry about her at school.

In addition to rocking good grades, Lexie opted to join her first extracurricular school activity. Beginning in January, Lexie stayed after school every Wednesday afternoon for choir. (Add all those miles of driving and hours of waiting to my list!) She loved it, and we loved watching her perform at her end of the year chorus concert. She looked so beautiful and poised on stage. She belongs up there!

School Days

School Days

Lexie, too, was upset about the school year ending. (Nerds rule the world, right?!?) When she came home, she was in tears. The last day of school was the last day Lexie would be a student at the elementary school. Lexie had to say goodbye to the elementary school that has been her home for the past three years, and will be heading to the 5th and 6th grade school in the Fall. She said she was going to miss her teachers, her classmates, seeing her best friend (who was in her class) at school everyday, and Mr. Bob, the school janitor. Poor kid is not excited about this transition. Change can be tough!

Last Day of School Photos

Lexie didn't change much from the first day to the last, either. She just got a little bit taller!

{DYLAN}

Last Day of School Photos

As a 6th Grader, this was Dylan's last year in elementary school. (I seriously can't believe it!) Dylan juggled a lot this year between school, band, orchestra, chorus and basketball. He also TESTED us this year by not turning in some homework assignments or studying for some tests, but he learned his lesson quickly!

Once he got the hang of juggling school work, school activities and extracurricular activities, he did great! I will say that 6th grade was the most challenging year Dylan has ever had. He always breezed through school by getting good grades with no effort and he got along with everyone, but as all parents of tweens know, things change at this age. Although Dylan says his teacher this year was his favorite teacher ever, I was not a fan of 6th grade in general!

BUT...there were great things! Like watching Dylan perform with the 6th grade choir (mandatory, but they were awesome), play trumpet in band (optional), and play violin in orchestra for the first time (also optional).  The band sounded amazing at their end of the year concert!

Big Family

School Days

Dylan also had the sweetest girlfriend since the beginning of the year. They had a few (very) supervised dates, and it's evident that they really care for each other! My sweet boy is growing up way too quickly!

The year ended with a fun field day, and a picture of the graduating class. (Cue tears! I remember most of those kids when they were adorable Kindergarteners!)

Class Photo Ideas

They concluded their year with a field trip to PNC Park to watch a Pirates game, and Dylan and the rest of the 6th Grade band performed the national anthem. Oh, how I wish I would have seen it in person!

In the Fall, Dylan will be heading to middle school! He will be starting school an hour earlier and arriving home an hour earlier. He needed to give up a few things so he could really focus on school work and what he truly loved, so he decided to give up band and orchestra. We are making him take a music class as one of his classes instead of study hall, so he opted for chorus.

I am bummed that he isn't playing trumpet and violin anymore, but it really wasn't his thing. I'm so glad he tried something new and played for two years, but basketball is what he truly loves!

Last Day of School Photos

This past year was a big year of change for Dylan. He really started to look like a teenager by the end of the year. I truly can't believe Dylan is heading to middle school and will become a teenager a few months later. Time needs to slow down!

First Day & Last Day of 6th Grade

Although it was challenging at times, it was a good year! My kids learned and grew so much. It was a year of change for all of us, and next Fall will bring even more change. Before I worry too much about what lies ahead, I plan to enjoy the NOW with my tribe. Their sadness over the year ending will fade, and there will be so many wonderful moments we can enjoy together! We have a fun Summer ahead of us!

Building Literacy Skills with Ben the Rooster + Free Subscription Code

DISCLOSURE: I received a subscription in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.

One of the things I feel passionate about while raising my children is teaching them to love reading!  Raising readers is a job that begins in the home, so working on building literacy skills is a part of our daily routine.

Reading

I’m a book lover, and I think it’s so important for my kids to see me reading. I encourage them to read as much as possible. We go on weekly trips to the library and I never say no to a book order or book fair. Building a library of books that they love is important, but it really doesn’t matter what they read…as long as they are reading!

Last Spring, Grant and I had an important decision to make. Lily was our first child who had a Summer birthday and it was a late one. She celebrated her 5th birthday just before the Kindergarten cutoff date, and we were on the fence about whether she would start Kindergarten or if she would stay in preschool for one more year.

Ultimately, with the input of her teacher, we decided to send her to Kindergarten. Lily loves school and thrives in a social setting, but I knew she would have a few struggles. It is very common in our school district to hold kids back if they have a Summer birthday, so Lily started Kindergarten with quite a few kids who celebrated their 6th birthday before she even celebrated her 5th, or celebrated their 6th birthday shortly after school started.

I never expected her to be on the same level as her peers who are a full year older, but it feels like we’re constantly racing to bridge the gap. While some of them came to Kindergarten already reading, Lily was still working on letter recognition and letter sounds. We now have to aim for that higher standard for Lily, which means we put in a LOT of work at home.

Flash cards, phonics games, leveled reading books and learning apps are a part of our daily routine after Lily gets home from school. Everything is finally starting to click, but sometimes you need to think outside the box to really spark their interest!

Enter Ben the Rooster!

Ben the Rooster

Ben, who is an adorable barnyard rooster, wants kids to love reading, too! Ben is a great pen pal for kids ages 3-8. Through the postcards that he sends twice a month, Ben encourages young readers to read, think, create and write!

Lily was so excited when something arrived in the mail just for her! When she pulled the postcards out of the envelope, the first thing she said was that the cartoon rooster was really cute. But when I started reading the postcard, Lily’s eyes lit up. She was so happy that somebody wrote to her!

Ben the Rooster

In the first postcard, Ben introduced himself and encouraged her to tell him about her favorite book and draw a picture about the book on the included blank, stamped postcard to send back. Lily immediately ran off to grab a pencil and markers, and got to work. She drew the picture of her favorite book, dictated to me what she wanted to say to Ben, signed her name and excitedly added a few hearts. The next day, she was beaming as she put her postcard into the mailbox. “I can’t WAIT to hear back from him!” And just over 2 weeks later, another postcard arrived in the mail!

There’s no doubt that Lily loves her pen pal, but as a parent, I love him, too! The postcards, which are mailed on the 1st and 16th of each month, are beautifully illustrated in a way that appeals to young children.  In each postcard, Ben tells a story, gives facts, asks questions and encourages the child to draw a picture on the blank postcard to send back.  This service is FUN and educational!

Lily recently received her third postcard, and she was so excited to read a story about a lost tooth! She can relate to that one! What I observed this time was that Lily immediately picked up the postcard and tried to read it on her own. She spotted every sight word that she knew, and shouted out the words. She began to realize just how much she could actually read, and her smile got bigger with each word. That was it! That was the spark I was waiting for!

Ben the Rooster

I sat down next to her, and we read the postcard together. I read the more difficult words, and she jumped in every time she knew a word. She even sounded out a few new words along the way. When we were done reading, Lily counted her teeth for Ben, then immediately got to work on her postcard to send back. This time, she worked with me and wrote the words she already knew on her own. She mailed off her reply and is eagerly awaiting her next postcard!

Ben the Rooster

Ben the Rooster is a sure winner in our home. As Lily declared, “Ben’s one of my best friends forever and I just love him!”  Anything that helps inspire the love of reading gets my vote of approval!
