What's Up Wednesday? ~ June Edition

What's Up Wednesday?

It's the last Wednesday of the month which means it's time for What's Up Wednesday! Is it just me, or did June fly by ridiculously fast?!? I can't believe the month is almost over, and July is arriving next week!

On the last Wednesday of each month, I share a life lately post. It's a great way to share what my family is up to! Not just the daily recap, but the things we're eating, watching, listening to, reading, wearing, and more...

Dear Hollywood Screenwriters, Please Reconsider Your Use of the "R" Word

Dear Hollywood Screenwriters, Please Reconsider Your Use of the "R" Word

Dear Hollywood Screenwriters,

I tend to be an open minded person. I don't get offended about much, I don't get caught up in controversy, and I try to understand both sides of an issue. But today, I need to bring light to a very serious topic that affects millions of your fellow human beings, including my own family: the overuse of the word "retarded" in the entertainment industry.

The word "retard(ed)" isn't just a casual word to toss around in everyday conversation. It has one particular meaning, and it's directed at an entire community of people who have a disability. It's derogatory, it's hurtful and it's extremely offensive. Did you know that "retard" was voted the most offensive word related to a disability? So why do so many of you continue to use it so freely?

4 Fun Ways to Encourage Kids to Learn During Summer

4 Fun Ways to Encourage Kids to Learn During Summer

DISCLOSURE: I received the #CampSci kits courtesy of Monsanto and a free app download from Read With Fonics.  All opinions are 100% my own. I only feature products and services I believe in on my blog.

For 12 weeks in the Summer, Dylan, Lexie and Lily get a much deserved break from the stress of the school year. (Liam is not so lucky!) Even though the time off is needed, I want their minds to stay active. Allowing my kids to enjoy the magic of Summer is the most important thing, but I also think it's important to encourage kids to continue to learn during Summer Break!

Learning over Summer Break should be simple and stress-free! I don't force my kids to read for an hour each day or complete worksheets. As a parent, I learned that if something is forced it can quickly become something that kids begin to hate. Summer learning should be FUN, and it definitely shouldn't become a dreaded task!

I take a laid-back approach when it comes to educational activities over the Summer. Enjoying Summer activities ALWAYS comes first! I allow my kids to stay up later and sleep in. I encourage them to play outside as much as possible. I try to avoid scheduling learning activities, and instead do them when time permits. Because the issue isn't forced, my kids end up having fun while learning!

Here are the 4 fun ways I encourage MY kids to learn during Summer:

READING REWARDS

I am a book lover, so I obviously want my kids to love reading, too. During the school year, they have to read for a certain amount of time each night, and they also have to read books they don't always enjoy. Over the Summer, I encourage my kids to read what they like, to participate in the Summer Reading program at the library if they want to, and I don't force time limits upon them.

Instead, I use a rewards system. For every 4 chapter books that Dylan and Lexie read, they get to go to the bookstore and choose a new book. Lily gets to choose 1 new book for every 20 leveled reading books that she reads. Liam gets a new book once a month.

In order to receive their free books, they have to recite a brief synopsis of each book they finished, tell me their favorite part and why, and share how they can relate to the main character. Surprisingly, my kids choose to read quite often, and they are very enthusiastic when they describe the books! Reading should be a fun activity rather than a forced one!

SCIENCE CAMP AT HOME

All of my kids love science, and performing science experiments is one of their favorite things to do! I'm a big fan of STEM activities, so I hardly ever say no to a requested experiment. Dylan, Lexie and Lily were so excited when Monsanto sent them a fun science kit, complete with a binder and aprons! (I was most impressed by the personalized box!) They couldn't wait to get started with #CampSci!

Science Experiments

Science Experiments

The first experiment was to create Edible Soil. Some of you saw my InstaStory last month, but the kids learned about soil, created the layers using different foods, and made Edible Soil Snacks. Afterwards, they drew a picture of the Edible Soil they created, and labeled the parts. It was fun...and tasty!

If you would like to recreate this experiment, you can watch the short video below!

My kids were even more excited when another box showed up on our doorstep! It arrived just in time for Pollinator Week. Their task was to create bee houses!

Bee House

Bee House

I already shared our first bee house, which we made during Pollinator Week, but this week we sat down to make two more bee houses for our backyard. Since we had already used half of the cardboard tubes they sent us, we had to roll our own tubes using construction paper.

FUN LEARNING APPS

Electronics are pretty much a staple in every home these days. Kids of all ages have them, and they can be great learning tools. The trick is to fill their devices with apps that are fun AND educational! The newest learning app that we discovered was Read With Fonics, and we LOVE it!

Apps for Kids

I mentioned this awesome app on my blog a few months back, and recently shared an InstaStory featuring it. It is a hit with Lily, and in a few months, I'm going to introduce Liam to this app, too. Lily loves it, and it has been so beneficial to her education. As a parent, I HIGHLY recommend it!

The Read With Fonics app, which was created by a teacher, is a fun game that teaches children how to read through the use of phonics. Kids build their skills by learning letter sounds while they play, and they have to pass each level in order to unlock the next.

Read With Fonics App

This app helped bridge the gap between Lily, who was one of the youngest in her class, and her older classmates. After just a few days of playing, she started to sound out words instead of simply memorizing them from her sight word list.

Learning Apps for Kids

Thanks to the Fonics app, Lily is continuing to build her reading skills over the Summer. She earns free time on her device by choosing an educational app to play first, and the Fonics app is her go to. She's a big fan of the adorable green alien, especially when he eats the words that aren't really words!

If there is one reading app that you download for your child, let it be this one! The app is available for download on apple, android and amazon devices. It's great for preschoolers, and kids in grade school who are just learning how to read. I credit the Read With Fonics app for helping Lily improve her reading skills!

FLASH CARDS

Flash cards are such a fun and easy way to learn the basics and memorize facts! If you're looking for a wide variety, head to the Target Dollar Spot right now. We have over 30 sets of flash cards which are kept in our Busy Bags Binders, in the car, and in my purse, and most of them came from Target!

My kids love to use flash cards, so I often use them on the go to keep them busy. I pull them out while we are waiting at an appointment, driving in the car or waiting for food at a restaurant. The kids are so happy for a distraction that they aren't even aware that they are learning!

Lily has been using flash cards to learn sight words, which is helping with her reading, and addition flash cards to memorize facts. Sometimes I ask her if she would like to do them, but most of the time, she brings them to me! It's her favorite way to learn, and thanks to all the practice this Summer, she is going to be prepared for first grade in the Fall!

Flash cards are essential for Liam's learning and speech. (For those who aren't familiar with my family, Liam has Down syndrome. You can read about his birth diagnosis HERE.) We work with him every day at home, but we make sure to rotate the sets so he doesn't get bored.  He has a few fun sets of touch and feel flash cards, and they are one of his favorite toys. He will actually sit on the ground, look at each card and try to say what it is, all on his own!

To make learning with flash cards more fun, try playing the game I made up for Lily: Flash Card Slam! Just place all of the flash cards in the set on the table or ground, then call out a color/number/shape/letter/word/answer. Have your child "slam" the card with an inflatable hammer or the palm of their hand. It's a huge hit in my home!

learning activities

My kids are having a great Summer full of fun, and they are learning along the way! Their excitement over learning during Summer makes me an incredibly happy mom!

Calling All Disney Lovers! {Netflix #StreamTeam}

Things sure have changed since I was a child! That fact is evident every single day that I spend with my four children. Their childhoods are so much different than my own childhood which was not all that long ago.

There is one thing, however, that remained the same. The magic of Disney! My childhood was full of Disney movies and Disney princesses. I knew all the movies by heart and ran around belting out the songs. The years flew by, but surprisingly, that aspect of my life hasn't changed one bit!

You see, I live with two adorable princesses...

081

...one amazing (Lion) King...

035

and another king who pulled the sword out of the stone and became the King of Moody Tweens Exasperated By Their Annoying Parents.

078

My days are full of princesses kissing frogs...

070

princesses escaping from behind locked doors to venture into the wild outdoors (shoes optional)...

007
030

magic carpet rides...

186

lion cubs growing up way too quickly because they just can't wait to be king...

037
041

sisterly squabbles and sisterly bonds (though not much snow these days)...

094

...and non-stop drama that leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat!

079

SO...have you heard the big news? Starting this month Netflix will become the exclusive US pay TV home of the latest films from Disney (and Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar)! Although you will already see some Disney titles on Netflix there are still more to come!

First up is the title I'm most excited about: On September 20th, Zootopia will be coming to Netflix! Will the next few days pass by s-l-o-w-l-y or will it be here in the blink of an eye? Since our family missed seeing this movie in the movie theater, we will be enjoying it during our next Family Movie Night! There's nothing better than curling up on the couch with popcorn and rootbeer floats and enjoying a Disney movie together!

19px2u

As for some old Disney favorites already streaming on Netflix, we recently introduced our little tribe to Tarzan! They loved the characters as much as I did when I saw it as a teenager. They were extra excited when I pulled down a box stored in my closet and gave them some stuffed animals I had from the movie!

Tarzan

Another Disney favorite that we were eager to introduce our kids to was Robin Hood. This movie is a classic! It came out way before I was born but I still fell in love with the fox and the bear while learning the story of Robin Hood. Since it's an older movie I was worried that our kids would think it was old and boring but it captured their attention!

Robin Hood

It's not just us parents who introduce new movies! In the Spring, Dylan's class read Holes and he wanted to watch the movie after they were done reading the book.  Our entire family ended up enjoying the movie!

Holes

These are just a few of the Disney titles currently streaming on Netflix and there are plenty more to come!

As a parent I've experienced the joy of watching my Disney favorites with my kids. I don't sing alone anymore. Now I have 4 sidekicks belting out Disney tunes along with me! No matter how much life changes the love for all things Disney stays strong through each generation!

Are you excited about this big news? Which Disney title are you hoping shows up on Netflix?

In addition to the Disney titles here's what's new on Netflix for Kids, Tweens, Teens and Families:

Motherhood Shaming

Motherhood shaming is at an all-time high right now.  We've all done it to some extent, and most likely, many of us have been victims of it. It's so easy to unfairly judge a mother without knowing the whole story, and according to the internet, it's ALWAYS the mother's fault when something goes wrong.

Why is motherhood shaming so prevalent these days? Even though we say we don't do it, we all do it at one point or another. Just step back and listen in your social circles. I guarantee you'll hear motherhood shaming. Is it a way to build ourselves up and make our lives seem better or is it simply because that's what we do to connect other moms? I'm not quite sure, but one thing is certain: It's getting out of control!

I have a personal experience with motherhood shaming. Shortly after Liam was born, one of my posts about having a child with Down syndrome went viral.  Bloggers and writers are always warned about one thing, and that is don't read the comments. And it is absolutely true. Although most of the comments were very positive, there were a few from internet trolls just trying to start a fight. There were also a few genuinely hurtful comments. One sticks out the most: "The child is not retarded. The parents are retarded for bringing a child who has Down syndrome into the world. There's prenatal testing for that." OUCH.  But here's the thing. That person did not read beyond the title. He judged me unfairly without even reading that it was never detected through blood tests and ultrasounds. I think we can agree that in many cases, we judge other mothers at first glance, without seeing the big picture.

I recently had the pleasure of watching a pre-screening of Tallulah, a movie written and directed by Sian Heder.  The story follows Tallulah (Ellen Page) who is a young woman with no direction in life. After Tallulah's boyfriend leaves her, Tallulah finds herself in an incredibly tough situation where a seemingly unfit mother leaves her toddler in the care of Tallulah while she goes out for the night. When the woman returns and passes out drunk on the bed, leaving her toddler to fend for herself, Tallulah makes the decision to take the toddler from her mother.  Tallulah turns to her boyfriend's mother (Allison Janney) for help, even though she was the first woman her boyfriend ran away from.  I'm not going to give away anything other than the basic synopsis. This incredibly well written and well acted movie deserves to be seen!

After viewing the movie, I had the amazing opportunity to join a Google Hangout with four other Netflix Stream Team members for an interview with Sian Heder, the talented writer and director of Tallulah. It was such a great experience and I loved getting the behind-the-scenes scoop. The plot was loosely based on an experience Sian Heder had as a nanny at a hotel and several of the scenes were inspired by some of her personal experiences and relationships.  I loved the movie the first time around and I can't wait to watch it again now that I have the inside scoop on the some of the scenes!

I could go on and on about the incredible actors, the well written script and the way the storyline draws you in and touches your heart, but what I really want to focus on is the underlying theme of motherhood shaming. My immediate reaction was to support Tallulah's decision, because in my opinion, that mother didn't deserve her child. But on the other hand, it isn't morally right to kidnap a child. Was that child better off with her own neglectful mother or better off with Tallulah? If Tallulah hadn't reacted in that manner, would the child's life be at stake? Although I found myself in favor of Tallulah's decision, my reaction and judgment was a classic case of motherhood shaming.

I think we can all agree that it isn't fair to judge another mother without knowing all the details about the situation.  I tend to believe that life isn't black and white. There are lots of shades of gray in between.  But is motherhood shaming warranted in some situations, like the situation Tallulah faced?

I will say that because of my own experience, I try not to judge other mothers. I believe in offering encouragement and support, and even defending mothers who are being judged unfairly in certain situations. I believe that it's better to offer help instead of jumping in on the motherhood shaming. I believe in unity. I believe in forgiveness. I believe we must always have an open mind. Most of all, I don't believe there are any perfect human beings, that there isn't a right or wrong answer in most cases and that mistakes happen. The storyline of Tallulah encouraged me to see both sides of the picture, but I still find myself judging some mothers in the most extreme cases. But is that really okay to do?

I want to hear YOUR thoughts about motherhood shaming in the comments below. Have you ever unfairly judged another mother? Have you ever been a victim of motherhood shaming? Are there certain situations that make it okay to shame another mother? What do you think we can do to stop it from spiraling out of control?

Tallulah is definitely a film that touches your heart, makes you think, and it just might change your mind about what you believe in the middle of the movie. Tallulah premieres on Netflix and in select theaters on July 29, 2016.  I highly recommend watching the movie and I would love to hear what you think!

The Absolute Best St. Patrick's Day Ideas for Kids

St. Patrick's Day is almost here!

I had so many things planned for the holiday, but sometimes parenting four kids and the busyness of life just takes over!  Needless to say, we only conquered half of our list.  I love making holidays special for my kids, so we had to accomplish a few things before the big day!

{EAT}

Fruit Loop Rainbows

I made these Fruit Loop Rainbows for Lily's class on Friday and they were a hit! I didn't add the Rolos for her class, but I did add them to the bags I made up for Dylan and Lexie's lunches this week.

I saw something similar made with skewers, but skewers mixed with preschoolers didn't seem like the best idea.  Pipe cleaners are a safer option, and you can mold them into a rainbow!

They are every bit as easy as they look. All you need are marshmallows, fruit loops cereal, Rolos,  pipe cleaners, and clear favor bags.  Slide a marshmallow onto one end of the pipe cleaner, thread the fruit loops in a pattern, then slide another marshmallow onto the other end of the pipe cleaner.  Fill the bottom of a clear favor bag with Rolos, slide in the rainbow, and you're done!  Easy and fun!

We don't have very many St. Patrick's Day books for kids, but the two we read over and over again are:
The Littlest Leprechaun is a new purchase.  I absolutely had to buy it because the leprechaun's name is Liam!

Grant and I struggled to come up with family-friendly movies to watch with our kids for St. Patrick's Day.  We ended up watching our usual Disney favorite tonight for Family Movie Night: Darby O'Gill and the Little People!

{DECORATE}

Decorate

There aren't as many options for St. Patrick's Day decorating as there are for other holidays, but I tried to add little touches throughout the house!

Shamrock Plants, Pots of Gold and Chevron Bow-Michael's
Table Runner, White Tray, Shamrock Mason Jar and Pillow-Target Dollar Spot
Wooden Sign-TJ Maxx

{PLAY}

091

I had big plans to make a St. Patrick's Day themed sensory table, but didn't have the time. SO. Homemade green glitter play dough was an easy alternative!

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1/2 cup warm water
Green food coloring
Gold glitter

Mix the flour and salt, add a few drops of food coloring (I used neon green) to the water, and slowly pour the water mixture into the flour mixture while stirring. Add more flour as needed until the mixture isn't sticky.  Sprinkle in some gold glitter and knead with your hands to blend.

Toss in some shamrock cookie cutters or show them how to make a shamrock, and you will officially have a few moments of peace and quiet!

{CREATE}

One of my kids made a card with a thumbprint shamrock in school a few years ago.  It was such a cute keepsake that we try to make one with all four kids' thumbprints each year!

With green paint for the thumbprints and a green marker to for the stem, it's a really easy craft that my three older kids can do on their own.  Liam needed a little assistance (and tried to paint everything green in the process).

I plan on finding a frame and hanging it up as part of our St. Patrick's Day decor!

We're having fun getting ready for St. Patrick's Day! In just a few days, we'll be wearing green and attempting to trap leprechauns!  How will you be celebrating?
