10 HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR KIDS

10 HEALTHY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR KIDS

This post is sponsored by Keurig Dr Pepper but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

With the start of the new year, many people are making resolutions or goals to improve themselves and their lives. Although I set goals for myself each year, I also try to make some family goals. This year, I’m doing something different: I’m encouraging my children to come up with their own goals to work toward in 2019!

Getting back into a regular routine while adding healthy changes can be a challenge after a long Holiday Break! It can, however, be a very positive experience if families work together and make it fun. After all, we do need encouragement if we want to succeed!

Although I want my kids to come up with some of their own goals, I did suggest a few “healthy” goals for the new year to inspire them...

Be active every day.

Most of our kids are involved in a sport or activity that keeps them active, but I always remind them to do something that gets their heart rates up and their bodies moving every single day! It can be as simple as taking the dog for a walk, hiking through the woods behind our house, playing outside or at the park, or jumping on the trampoline.

Don’t skip meals.

Eating healthy, balanced meals throughout the day is so important for overall health. When meals are skipped, junk foods tend to be eaten in their place! If a meal needs to eaten on the go (which it does at times in our home), there are PLENTY of healthy choices.

Choose healthy after-school snacks.

Kids are ravenous when they come home from school! They just want to find something quickly, and devour it. Replacing junk foods with healthier options make it easy for them to eat healthier after-school snacks! Mott's® 100% Juices and Mott’s Applesauce are perfect snack choices!

Volunteer for something you believe in.

Giving back to your community can have so many benefits! It can improve happiness, promote family togetherness, and inspire kids to make volunteering a part of their lives into adulthood. Help your child find a cause that they believe in, then brainstorm ways they can help. My kids love to gather donations for our local animal shelter and deliver them, and my older kids want to sign up to volunteer to spend time with the animals in the shelter once a month!

READ READ READ.

In the era of electronics, cell phones, and video games, kids just aren’t reading enough. Sometimes the material they read at school is just boring! It’s so important to help kids find a genre they like, and to set aside a block of time each day for them to read!

Make music a part of your life.

Music has SO many benefits for kids, including improving grades at school, emotional well being, and self-esteem! Encourage them to learn an instrument or use their voices this year!

Say no to screen time more often.

Our lives are FILLED with screens. TV’s, cell phones, gaming devices, and tablets have taken over, and too many kids are staring at screens all day long. In the new year, try to set time limits, and encourage kids to replace a portion of their screen time with something more productive every day.

Pack healthy lunches.

Let’s face it...packing lunches can often be a dreaded task! It’s so easy to toss in convenient foods, like bags of chips and snack cakes. Buying healthier options, like Mott’s 100% Juice Pouches and Mott’s Applesauce, that are every bit as convenient as those junk foods but so much better for you, make this task easy!

Take your vitamin each day.

No matter how hard we try to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet, there is usually something lacking. Filling in the nutritional gaps by taking a daily multivitamin is a great idea, and it will lead to healthy lifelong habits!

Get plenty of sleep!

Most of us aren’t getting enough sleep, and lack of sleep can really cause a lot of problems. In many cases, kids are distracted by electronics, and spending too much time on them before bed can lead to poor sleep habits. This year, we are collecting ALL devices before bedtime and keeping them in a central supervised location so our kids can focus on sleep instead!
