Go Big or Go Home...or Something Like That

It has been a week since I was able to blog, but I have a good (or not so good) reason.  Life has been a bit crazy over the past week!

We are very lucky that Liam is so healthy.  Children with Down Syndrome tend to have weakened immune systems. Thankfully, Liam is just like our other kids, and doesn't get sick often.  The big difference is that the older kids tend to get mild illnesses and recover quickly.  When Liam gets sick, he gets sick very quickly, and it hits him harder.

Unfortunately, his good luck streak came to an end a few days ago.

On Friday morning, Liam developed a low fever.  We were visiting my parents, and my mom noticed he was tugging his ear.  She suspected he had an ear infection, but I discovered his bottom molar had broken through. His fever went down with a dose of Tylenol, and he was fine all day. That evening, he spiked a fever again.  Just like earlier, even though he had a low fever, he was acting perfectly normal.  No other symptoms were present. He was eating great, nursing great, playing, laughing, and smiling.

On Saturday, he was fever-free and acting like his usual self.  I just assumed his molar was bothering him the day before, so we continued with our scheduled plans. He was fine! Around 7:00 that evening, I noticed he felt warm again.  I took his temperature, discovered he had a fever, and gave him medicine to bring it down.  20 minutes later, he started coughing, and it sounded just like croup. Everything went downhill after that.

By the time we went to bed, his breathing was loud and his breaths were quick.  By 3 AM, his fever spiked to 105.3.  That happened when he aspirated his milk and ended up with pneumonia last winter, and the doctor told us that high fevers often caused rapid breathing. We assumed his breathing was due to croup and the high fever. We treated his symptoms and monitored him, but he was still struggling at 8 AM. Grant and I were really worried at that point.

I took him straight to the Urgent Care that is close to our house, as soon as they opened.  I couldn't believe how quickly he went from acting normal to getting really sick.

The doctor walked into the room, saw how he was breathing, and immediately called an ambulance.  She gave him a breathing treatment as we waited, and explained that he probably had flu or pneumonia, and that a baby breathing the way he was could get worse very quickly. She was so nice, and kept talking, probably to keep me calm.

The full impact of what was happening didn't hit me until the EMT wheeled him out on a stretcher, through the very full waiting room.  Everybody was staring at us and saying they hoped he felt better, and I had to blink back tears.

I have to say, I never expected that was how our morning would go! I expected a chest xray, antibiotics, or a breathing treatment. Instead, Liam and I ended up with our first ambulance ride ever.  I hope we never have to do that again!  Luckily, he fell asleep on the way, and the EMT didn't have to intervene. We chatted a bit about what they would probably do in the ER, and discovered that he actually transported Grant's dad when he was sick.

As we neared the hospital, I was surprised to look out the back and see Grant trailing us. Grant somehow made it to Urgent Care, picked up my car, and caught up to the ambulance on the way!

When we pulled up to the ER, the hospital looked deserted.  The EMT who was driving opened the doors, and we heard a rush of water.  Water was pouring out of the ceiling above us.  A nurse came out and led us into the ER, where alarms were going off and strobe lights were flashing.  It was completely empty, and looked like something out of a movie! Apparently a pipe burst just outside of the ER and set off all the alarms!

So...our first trip to the ER was an exciting one!

Grant came into the room before the EMT left, a nurse took Liam's stats and got him hooked up, and we waited for a doctor.  Our poor little man was so sick.  It broke my heart!

I was seriously impressed with the care Liam received in the ER.  Not one, not two, but THREE doctors cared for him.  They made sure someone came into the room every 15 minutes to examine him.  We have been to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh many times for appointments, but this was our first visit to the ER.

They did a rapid flu test and checked his lungs. They gave him medicine to bring his fever down, gave him an oral steroid, and started an Epinephrine (my phone apparently autocorrects this every time!) breathing treatment.

Shortly after the treatment, Liam started to perk up a bit.

We had an exciting morning. Liam got a cough and really high fever (105.3) overnight. He was really struggling to breathe, so I took him to Urgent Care first thing this morning. The doctor took one look at him and called for an ambulance. So we had our fi

The flu test was negative, and his lungs were clear.  His chest was very congested and his nose started to run while we were there. They diagnosed him with Croup, Bronchiolitis, and RSV.  They said he could probably go home because his oxygen levels were good, but they had to monitor him for a few hours before we could leave.

Liam was finally able to rest comfortably.

This little guy is finally resting comfortably. Croup and bronchialitis, most likely caused by RSV. Symptoms came on suddenly, and he declined rapidly. Epinephrine treatment helped so much, and the steroid they gave him will last 3 days. Thankfully, we ju

By that point, it was afternoon, and we were starving.  My amazing friend, Steph, showed up with food for us.  She's just that awesome.  Liam woke up, and had another first.  First ambulance ride, first ER visit, and first time eating french fries!!!

A big thank you to my dear friend, @littlepunkyandpumpkinpies , for bringing food to us in the ER. Even Liam felt well enough  to eat a few bites after a breathing treatment. His first ambulance ride (mine too), his first visit to the ER, and his first ti

Liam remained stable, and was finally discharged from the ER after a very long day!  We were so relieved to go home.

On Monday afternoon, we went to Liam's pediatrician for a follow up.  His chest was still very congested and rattly, but he seemed to be improving.

We just followed up with Liam's pediatrician. He still isn't his usual, constantly smiling self, so we know he  feels sick. His chest is still very congested, but his lungs are clear. His fever is much lower, his ears are clear, and his cough is improving

After we got home, he ate half a banana, and took a nap.  When he woke up, he was struggling again.  His high fever was back, he was coughing a lot, his breathing was very labored, and he whimpered and moaned for hours. He threw up everything he drank, and had diarrhea.  He refused to eat or drink. He had another awful night, just like the one he had just before we went to the ER, so his pediatrician wanted to see him again.  He definitely seemed more sick than he was when we were in the ER.

Sure enough, he was really sick. In addition to Croup, Bronchiolitis, and RSV, his doctor suspected he had a sinus infection.  Surprisingly, his ears were completely clear!  She gave him a breathing treatment in the office, and sent us home with a nebulizer, adult doses of albuterol, and an antibiotic.  He was smiling a bit after his in-office treatment, but declined rapidly again.

Back in for another breathing treatment. Resulted in his first real smile in almost 24 hours! He really declined after his appointment yesterday, and got really sick overnight. We never had a kid this sick before. He doesn't get sick often, but I guess he

Yesterday was just awful. Liam was so sick.  His fever never dropped below 103, and even with breathing treatments, he struggled to breathe.

I've been saying for days that we have never had a child this sick.  It really is draining and so hard to watch.  I spent hours with him wrapped around my neck, because it was the only time he was comfortable. My human scarf is just the sweetest!

This is what I call the human scarf. He's usually all about sleeping in his own space, but when he's sick, he prefers to curl around my neck. Head on one shoulder, feet on another! I'm fairly certain I will be the next one to get sick...all those coughs a

Liam cried from 4-8:30 last night, and finally fell asleep after a breathing treatment. He was so miserable!

IMAG3167

He had another rough night, and although his fever is lower today and he played for a few minutes, there isn't any significant improvement.

Life right now. Every 4 hours. He falls asleep every time!

RSV, Croup, and Bronchiolitis is an awful combination!  Liam doesn't get sick often, but when he does, he makes it dramatic!

I'm praying he starts to feel better.  He goes back to the doctor on Friday morning. Their ultimate goal is to keep him out of the hospital, and allow him to recover at home.  We really miss our smiling boy who is so full of joy!

Christmas Tradition

One of our favorite Christmas traditions is our annual trip to see Santa in the nearby town where I grew up!

I visited Santa at his little house, in the center of town, when I was a child.  My dad eventually "filled in" for Santa there for several years. My kids know that Santa can't be at every mall/place around the world, so he has helpers that work with him. ;)  When Dylan was just a few weeks old, we took him to see Santa at that little house, and we go back every year.  This tradition holds a special place in my heart!

We make it a big family night, and we all look forward to it!  We visit Santa at his little house, then have dinner at Pizza Hut, and we finish our evening with a visit to a nearby house with light displays.

This year (technically last year!), we went the week before Christmas.  Of course, we picked the only freezing night in December!

Despite waiting in line, in the cold weather, the kids were so excited to see Santa!

Well, at least the older two were excited!

Luckily, we didn't have to wait too long!

Finally, we were on Santa's front porch.

With four kids, you need a plan of action before visiting Santa.  We decided on oldest to youngest, followed by an attempt at a group picture!

Dylan went first.  It makes me so sad that he might be too big to sit on Santa's lap next year.  As he told Santa what he wanted, I couldn't help but notice how BIG he looked sitting on his lap, and my mind kept flashing back to the tiny baby sleeping in Santa's arms.  How quickly time flies!

Lexie was up next!  Every picture I took looked the same.  She stared at Santa, and just kept talking!  That is so Lexie!  As we were leaving, Lexie insisted they were lucky enough to see the real Santa. I think she was right! ;)

Lily made us all laugh!  When she first climbed on Santa's lap, they had to discuss just how pretty her dress was!  After that, Santa asked her what she wanted, and she promptly replied, "I want a panda that burps and poops!"  The photographer who was sitting in the corner immediately started laughing, and I could tell Santa had a difficult time keeping a straight face!  She is such a character!

Liam was last.  He didn't smile until the end (and I missed it!), because he was too busy checking to see if Santa's beard was real, and holding onto his hand.  It was so sweet!

Like I said, we attempted a group picture.  It didn't work very well!  Santa handed out coloring books and candy, wished us a Merry Christmas, and we said our goodbyes until next time!

By that point, we were starving, so we decided to go out to eat before visiting the light displays.  We love our yearly trip to Pizza Hut (the only pizza I like, but we never go any other time of the year!), but this year the service was awful.  Thank goodness the pizza was still delicious!

We finished our evening at the house with all the light displays.  We love to see our old favorites, and discover new things that were added.

Back To The Grind

Well, it's official. Christmas Break has come to an end.

Grant returned to his regular work week, with no vacation days in sight. Dylan and Lexie headed back to school today, after 17 fun-filled days of Christmas vacation. Liam started therapy again, after taking a week off.

Christmastime is so magical, and now everything seems so blah!  We're all feeling a bit bummed!

IMG_20150105_075920

We spent most of our time together with family and friends.  We did something almost every single day. We stayed up late, and we slept in. We kept busy, but also enjoyed a more relaxed schedule. It was glorious!!!

Despite feeling bummed about the end of the holiday season, 2015 is off to a great start!

011
IMAG2893-1

I never make resolutions.  I just think of the new year as a fresh start, and I aim to make positive changes.  This year, I'm all about simplifying things and staying organized.

I have so many items on my to do list, but not enough time to tackle those projects.   I decided to break those big projects down to small, manageable projects.  I'm trying to tackle one mini project every day.

So far, so good!  I'm currently tackling the kitchen. I'm going through one drawer or cabinet each day.  I'm getting rid of stuff we don't need and finding ways to organize everything so it's easier for me to find what I need. After this room is done, I'm moving on to another room. I already made some positive changes that made my life just a bit easier!

Another change is that I'm making exercise a priority again.  Once the kids went back to school, I really started slacking.  I was doing so well with T25 and walking/running several times a week.  I felt so good, and I was in great shape. Then, the busyness of back to school, followed by all the holidays, took over.  I'm definitely feeling more tired and grumpy, so I firmly believe it's from the lack of regular exercise!

Once it's warm again (or I replace my treadmill), I'm planning on running 3 times a week. In the meantime, I started Piyo.  I love yoga and pilates, so I figured I would give it a shot!  I tried it for the first time today, and loved it! I don't think it's going to be too hard to stay focused.  T25 was definitely more difficult, and I completed that, so I can do this!

Just for the record, I don't diet. Period.  I eat a healthy, well-rounded diet, but I'm not afraid to have a handful of chips or a piece of cake.  I believe in regular exercise and eating everything in moderation. It never failed me before!

As for the rest of my crazy crew....

Liam started the year with a new tooth.  Last night, we noticed another tooth breaking through.  Apparently he's going to do this all at once now!  Despite the ticked off look in the photo below, you wouldn't even know he was teething.  He's just so happy all the time!

IMAG2942-1

We went over to my friend, Jocie's, house on Saturday night for the playoff game.  We cheered on the Steelers, but sadly, it didn't go too well.  Although the loss was disappointing, it was a great season! Plus, hanging out with great friends helped to soften the blow!

018
IMG_20150103_220205

My kids got a lot of gift cards for Christmas.  Although they spent a lot during our day after Christmas shopping extravaganza (aka ULTIMATE stress), they still had money left.  I had to go to Kohl's yesterday before my Kohl's cash expired, so guess who accompanied me?

IMG_20150104_174520

We conquered 4 stores in less than 2 hours, including logging in some time in the Kohl's dressing room.  The kids were REALLY good, and everything went well until Liam goosed the lady in front of us at the end of our shopping trip.  Luckily, she thought it was funny!

I don't feel like a supermom often, but when I can take all 4 of them shopping alone, and make it out with minimal stress, I feel like I can do anything!  They really are good kids!

Our Christmas decorations are still up, but I couldn't resist some Valentine's Day items.  Target gets me every time!!!

IMG_20150105_120622
On that note, my Christmas posts are coming!  I've just been busy over the past 2 weeks. I do, however, have 3 posts lined up!

We ended our last day of Christmas break with spaghetti night.  One of us was VERY excited!

IMG_20150104_185105

Which brings us to today...

Liam had his weekly OT session this morning.  His Early Intervention coordinator joined us to do his quarterly review.  Liam reached ALL the PT goals that were set 3 months ago, and reached or almost reached all his OT and ST goals.  Which means his therapists are adding a bunch of new goals!  We are so proud of this little guy!

The cold weather returned to Pittsburgh today, after an unusually warm December.  It's freezing right now (like 20 degrees!), and is only going to get colder over the next few days.  Winter is officially here!

I refuse to fall victim to the winter blues, so we're filling up our calendar with lots of fun parties and playdates!  The only plus of time flying by is that winter will fly by, too!

Here's to a great year!!!

Goodbye 2014, Hello 2015!

2014 was a wonderful year!  Probably my favorite year so far.  2015 has really big shoes to fill!

Years ago, we used to ring in the new year with my family.  My sister lived out of state, so we waited to celebrate Christmas with our family until she came home for New Year's Eve.  It was such a fun tradition, but once she moved back home, our parties stopped. Although I miss it, I understand that things change.

Over the past few years, we grew closer to a group of friends.  They are like family to us, and we started to celebrate New Year's Eve together.  Last year, we partied with them as usual, and everyone ended up spending the night.  We had so much fun that we decided to do it again this year!

Last night, everyone gathered at Steph's house for the party.  8 adults and 13 kids create a lot of noise and chaos! We chatted, ate, and played until it was nearly midnight.

1
2

Surprisingly, all the kids, including the two babies, made it to midnight!  The kids batted balloons around while we passed out glasses, hats, and noise makers.  Steph and I are both members of the Netflix Stream Team, so we celebrated with the All Hail King Julien party supplies that Netflix sent us!

It was so much fun counting down to the new year with some of our closest friends!   The night flew by, and 2015 arrived so quickly!  I am so thankful I got to spend it with the 5 people I love most.  I'm so blessed!

069

The babies and little kids were very tired, so we attempted a group picture before they fell asleep. It was quite an ordeal to get everyone in one place, and just as I was setting up the shot, my camera battery started to die.  Oh well!  Perfect is overrated!

6

Shortly after midnight, the kids changed into pajamas, and most headed to bed.

10899169_879230775431034_767825335_n

The adults stayed awake, and Steph, Tracy, and I actually outlasted the men!  They went to bed just before 4 AM, but we talked until 5 AM.  It was SO late, but so worth it. We rarely have the chance to stay up so late talking, without kids interrupting, so those memories we made in the wee hours of the morning were priceless!

Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep!  By 10 AM, Steph's house was bustling!

The kids played, the adults cleaned up, and we all ate a big breakfast together before heading home.

{Just for the record, true friends cover their pajama-clad friend while taking a picture, to spare her the embarrassment of being the only one not dressed.  ;) }

If last night was a sign of all the fun to come over the next year with our friends, I have a feeling it will be a great year!

The rest of our day passed by quickly!

All but one of us took a nap when we got home.

I got a big hug from a dear friend who I didn't get to ring in the new year with.

Instead of the traditional pork and sauerkraut New Year's Day dinner, we opted for Chinese takeout. A friend joined us for dinner. It was so delicious!!!

We stopped by my sister's house so Dylan and Lily could see their cousin, Kelvin, before he returns to Florida. (Lexie and Liam saw him at his soon to be wife's bridal shower on Tuesday.) It has been over a year and a half since we last saw him, and we miss him so much!  I wish all our family and friends could pack up and move to Florida with them!

We visited for about an hour, and my brother-in-law, Kevin, gave the kids sharpie tattoos.  They thought it was the coolest thing ever! Lexie ended up staying to spend the night with my niece, Aubrey, while the rest of us headed home.

2

Once home, I tried to snap a few pictures of Liam wearing his (3-6 month..ha!) New Year's Day shirt, but he decided clapping and trying to climb down was more fun!

3
4

By that point, it was getting late. Liam went to bed, Lily and Dylan watched a movie, and Grant and I watched a few episodes of The Office on Netflix.  It was nice to finally relax!

Our New Year's Eve party/sleepover with our friends was so much fun, and the first day of 2015 was a great one!  Life isn't picture perfect at all times, but I wouldn't change anything!

Here's to a happy, healthy, prosperous new year! Happy 2015!!!
