The Not-So-Perfect Halloween

Welcome to the least Pinteresting, most un-Instagram-worthy Halloween recap ever! Halloween isn't my favorite holiday, and it definitely didn't go as planned this year. Actually, I almost considered skipping the recap entirely, but I like to document the real life moments on my blog, so I can turn it into a book one day!

Halloween

Before I recap what we DID do, let me focus on what didn't happen. We were so busy in October, that I didn't even decorate the house until 10 days before Halloween. Those decorations are still up, and probably will be until I get a few moments of free time. We didn't make it to the pumpkin patch because travel soccer and life with kids consumed our weekends, then my mom had a health scare and ended up in the hospital. Our pumpkin - yes, singular - wasn't carved until the day before Halloween. We didn't make any crafts or recipes. Poor Liam didn't even have a costume, because I wasn't spending a fortune on a costume he would refuse to wear. I forgot to buy the kids their Halloween morning treats, which has been a tradition since Dylan was 1. The unseasonably warm October weather went away for Trick or Treating, leaving us all cold and miserable. And to top it off, my original Halloween recap completely disappeared before I hit publish on Friday, and now I can't upload my pictures properly today. Yay, Halloween!

Before I move on to MUCH better holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, I'm going to give Halloween a final shout out. I'm not going to lie. I'm happily saying goodbye to the holiday that only my kids seemed to love this year...that is, until it was too cold to actually enjoy it! Here's to the few pictures I took and the most brief Halloween recap in blog history!

Here's what we DID do for Halloween:

We went Trick or Treating at Grant's office.

The kids got so much candy that going trick or treating on Halloween wasn't actually necessary. And it's a good thing, because my wimpy little ones were done after 40 minutes on Halloween night!

Trick or Treating

Lily had dress up and trick or treat night at her dance studio.

I didn't take a single picture because Thursday nights are mass chaos at the studio, and I didn't want to move because I feared losing my precious seat.

Lexie and Liam had Halloween parties at school.

And I don't have a single picture. I didn't sign up to volunteer at Lexie's 5th Grade party, and I didn't even pull out my camera during Liam's class party on Halloween.  Lily missed hers so she could go to Grant's office Halloween party.

We carved a pumpkin.

Because of the constant busyness, we only had time to carve one pumpkin. The other ones we had were recycled for Thanksgiving decor!

We went Trick or Treating on Halloween.

And it was FREEZING. Gloves and coats were necessary, and Liam wore a costume from the dress up bin over a snowsuit! This year, Dylan ran off with his girlfriend and friends, while Grant and I set off with Lexie, Lily and Liam.

Trick or Treating

As I mentioned before, our crew was over the cold after 40 minutes. Grant took Lily and Liam back to his mom's house for some crockpot chicken rice soup, while Lexie and I hit up a few more streets. We happily returned to Grant's mom's warm house to eat some soup, and waited for Dylan to return. He, of course, lasted the entire two hours, and returned with two full bags of candy. I can't help but think that this might have been his last year Trick or Treating. Halloween just isn't the same as it used to be!

And that sums up our Halloween! Better luck next year, right?!? Now bring on Thanksgiving and Christmas!

  3. I had to giggle at the things you didn't do, only because I can relate! Still looks like you guys had fun and I love that all the kids helped carve 1 pumpkin!

  4. Soooo...I kind of feel ya' when it comes to saying good riddance to Halloween. We were crazy busy the entire month of October and the weekend before ended up being our catch up for the entire month. Halloween night went by way too fast and I was a complete hot mess. Jon and I both agreed that it was our most subdued Halloween ever. We used to go all out. But you know what, you and I - we did it, dang it! You're amazing and you handle and juggle the mommy gig so well! Your kiddos look happy and excited and super cute! But, man - it makes me sad that it may be you son, Dylan's, last year going out. Do they have to grow up?! It's so bittersweet... You rock, Mama! And by the way, I wouldn't have given up that chair either. ;)

  6. Well, your kids are all smiling! So you are still doing great. And if it makes it any better, I didn't decorate for Halloween until 3 days before...and all I did was hang some cheesy cheap window things! We didn't carve any pumpkins, but my kids had each painted one at some event they attended with their grandmother a few weeks before (I don't even know where she took them...a pumpkin patch and corn maze I think!) And then they wore the same costumes from last year because 1. I spent a fortune on them last year and 2. they didn't ask for new ones! So #momsoftheyearunite!

  7. Sorry your Halloween didn't go as planned. And don't feel bad about missing activities. My kids wanted to carve pumpkins so bad again this year, and we just didn't have the time. This season of life is INSANE and we're all doing the best we can! You're the BEST momma and all of your other amazing crafts and fun activities throughout the year are proof that you always go above and beyond. Your kids will never even remember the things they didn't do... they will only remember all of the fun things that you did do! Don't sweat it, Momma!

  8. Bo for it being cold, we don't carve pumpkins till a couple of days before becaue it's so warm they go bad. We did it on Sunday with Halloween being on Tuesday and they were all moldy and gross by the time Halloween rolled around. But we still lit candles and made the most of it. Our October was crazy too, we barely got things done...and yep my halloween decor is still out too.

  9. We had a huge storm rage through our area two days before Halloween leaving widespread power outages for Halloween; it was not fun trying to figure out WHERE we could trick or treat that had power and while I am never a huge fan of Halloween I seriously considered skipping it this year and just offering to buy my kids some candy the next day.
